How much roughly would I be looking at to have the piston rings changed on a 1990 8v Digifant? The mechanic didn't seem overly interested in this job so didn't quote.

He quoted 100 to replace the valve stem seals. Is this a good price? The mechanic said he would be able to do them without taking the head off.

Just wondering whether to keep the car or not as it is using a bit of oil, say half a litre per 3wks. I know GTI's use oil but i have noticed a small puff of blue smoke if I dab the throttle when idling.

Yeah was gonna try the seals if 100 is a fair price it's not the end of the world if it doesn't fix it. Cheers for the heads up on the oem seals though.

No i haven't done anything to be honest not being handy with the spanners. The rocker gasket isn't leaking though.

dont mean the gasket...theres a mesh filter spot welded inside it , on older neglected cars they can get blocked solid and cause smoking/oil use

theyre not dear...get the mech to stick one on it

Is that a straight forward swap then? Just take out my 1.8 and drop the 2ltr in and it'll run with the standard gearbox, ecu etc?
