hi im thinking about buying a golf, im 18 so was thinking of getting a mk2 1.6 driver standard. theres always few on autotrader for under 500 with MOT, will these be reliable do u reckon?

    i was thinking about mods...

wheres the best place to get nongenuine big bumpers? ive found em for about 140, are these hard to fit myself? and would these need a proffesional spray or can i just go mad with a poo load of halfords tornado red?

also, whats the cheapest way of lowering the car including fitting the springs etc, and how low can you normally get away with on 16's (forgot the depth and tyre sizes)
(ive already got the wheels from when i had a mk3 polo)

thanks for any help sorry bout all the poo questions

Censored cos its a 'family' forum ;)

You might find insurance a bit steep on a 1.6 - they are group 9.

Even the 1.3's are group 7.

My missus just picked up a mint 1.3 Ryder, lowered 40mm, alloys, alarm and immobiliser for 695, so there are bargains to be had.

    Swear filter!

One thing I would say is have you checked out insurance costs? I had a Mk2 1.6 'Ryder' when I was about 21 and that expensive to insure as I only had one years no claims bonus. Also modifying the car can affect your insurance too. [:s]

Apart from that, the driver is a good car and should be reliable if well looked after. Main problems seem to be carb related from what I read on here. :)

EDIT: beaten to it on the insurance thing! [:$]

    thats not a bad qoute. i was quoted 1800 on my 1.6 when i was 17 [:s]

Although just to urine you off a bit, my girlfriend has been driving 6 months and only pays 800 TPFT  (wish i had boobs sometimes)

I got 40mm springs when i had mine (10, brand new in the halfords clearout [:D] ) my mate got an identical set from egay, cost him 35, so they aren't much. some spring compressors and a few hours and they are on, easy job.

GSF possibly for your bumpers, although I suspect that they're going to look poo if you spray them yourself.

Could possibly try ringing one of those Salvage places where they list details of what part you want and then other breakers phone you if they have the part. Might find a set of bumpers that way.

Ebay is also loaded with Golf parts, especially *Rare* ones.

Also try the Wanted forum on here. People tend to have bits kicking about.

You could easily fit the springs yourself. It's not difficult. I've even done it myself and I'm not mechanical in the slightest.

Reckon a garage would charge you between 1 and 2 hrs labour to fit them though.
