    asking for a mate here....

    88 polo coupe s 1300

the starter randomly fails to start the car...soleniod is heard to click on each crank of the key and after approx 20 tries it will go , other times it works 1st time

its had 2 used and one refurb starter on it...cleaned and extra battery earths added

any ideas? does the fact it clicks every time confirm the switch is good?

anyway to test the starter/solenoid to confirm its good/bad

the only way really is to check if the starter solenoid is switching

put a multi meter on the output side of the solenoid and measure the voltage when the solenoid closes if its around 11 volts then i'd say the starter is sticking, if its lower you may need to start checking connections from battery to starter

if its clicking tho everytime i'd say the ign switch is fine as its providing power to the starter solenoid to switch it

it would be strange to find 3 starters that are all dodgy hey?

would you agree the next step would be a new batt-starter lead

yeah he's cleaned the batt lead but that done rule out a internal break somewhere...i told him to knock up a chunky new one

do you know if the polo box has a bush the same as golfs do...could that be jamming?

not sure tbh, have a look at an old one, if you can see the end of the starter shaft then yes the bush is in the gearbox
