    what do you mean by mk3 phase 2? what we'd call a mk5?

    as in 1999-2001 model?

    if so then the GTI is the fastest model but it's only 125bhp & a fairly heavy car (in my books anyway).

    then after that there is a 100bhp 1.4 16v model. none of them are anything to write home about.

    normally in the UK a mk3 is the shape of my car. although offically it's a mk2 facelift. also known as an 86c/2f. it gets confusing!

    Yeah polo models are confusing! Well its called a mark 3 facelift (phase 2) by VW. But i'd call it a mk5 :)
    I think most of em or not as good performance as the lupo's. So im thinking of a Lupo sport 16v [:D]

    None of that silly VW head office model nonsense!

    Polo's, the definitive guide.

    Mk1 76-80 (Best - GLS, 1272cc 55bhp)
    Mk2 81-89 (Best - Coupe S, 1272cc 55bhp)
    Mk3 90-92 (Best - G40, 1272cc 113bhp)
    Mk4 93-97 (Best - Sport 16v, 1.6 100bhp)
    Mk5 98-01 (Best - GTI 1.6 125bhp)
    Mk6 02-(Best - TDI Sport, 1.9 100bhp)

    Mk3 G40 still the fastest overall though, quicker than a mk5 GTI.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

    funny that we're talkin about polo's...i've just been blatting around country lanes in my girlies mkIV 1.6 8v glx...and i've gotta say, its not bad. it's so relaxing to drive, no need to rev it hard comfy suspension. not very fast, but it didn't really bother me (surprisingly), just keep the momentum up and its fun.

    Polo's what exactly? :lol:

    Anyhow, the really definitive Typ86 (Mk1) was the 60bhp HH engined
    Derby. Much fancied by purveyors of hot cams and twin carbs back in the
    day. A certain Mr Stiles reminisced with me on this subject recently, an
    easy 85bhp in a 700kg car [:D]

    most of those dates aren't right. mk2= 1981-1990. mk3 = 1990-1994. mk4 = 1994-1999. mk5 = 1999-2001.

    The official german codes are:

    mk1=type 86
    mk2=type 86c
    mk3=type 86c/2f (86c facelift)
    mk4=6n
    mk5=6nf (6n facelift)
    mk6=9n

    HH is a solid lifter, rocker finger OHC head, originally with a solex manual
    choke carb. Rattly sounding compared to the HK which has a better oil
    system and hydraulic tappets, but even revvier. I'm pretty sure they ran a
    hotter cam, but the same at the bottom end.

    Mine (HK)is a solid lifter too. I think the MH is the first hydraulic one.

    mmm, my mistake, too many letters flying round in my head - you just
    have the less accident prone oiling LOL

    The HH made its extra power through rpm really, most of the polo
    engines are factory tuned to peak well before 6k, and if you let them
    breathe even a little more it really helps.

    The GT engines, especially the 3F are the same principle- torque is no
    higher than the 55bhp motors, but they can rev, and hence make 20bhp
    more [:D]
