Power Steering Belt and tensioner Bolt issue

Over the past few weeks my 16v has developed the obligitory Power Steering squeel, so I picked up a new belt from GSF today, and set about changing it... Thus the problems start.

The first is that everything was seized solid, which resulted in the tensioner bolt snapping whilst trying to undo it! [:$] The second is that the belt I got from gsf is 740mm whilst the one I took off is 730mm, but I can't seem to find this size of belt from them.

So my questions are will I be able to get the tensioner bolt ,And nuts etc, from VW, and if so does anyone know the part numbers? The second is does anyone know where I will be able to get the 730mm belt from, or am I just being a muppet in finding it? :p

For reference, the engine is an ABF (And yes Trev I am already breaking your old car!!! )

    Cheers

Fantastic that is just what I needed, cheers. The KR setup is what I have for the PAS.

To ze VW spares department I go!!

Just before I order the parts from VW, I would like the forums opinion on something.

Is it worth removing the PAS completely?

I know there have been other posts regarding this, but I was wondering what peoples opinions are on a purely road based car?

The process of replacing the steering rack is not a real issue as I am probably dropping the front subframe soon anyways to work on. As such this is purely based on your personal opinions, and experience.

I like PAS on a MK2, its nicely weighted and only really noticable when parking. bit quicker than manual as well so handy for piling lock on

edit: in your situation, I'd bin all the MK2 rubbish completely and fit a MK3 alternator/pas setup, but thats just me. You need an ABF crank pulley, then everything else can be used from a non-ac MK3 1.8-2.0 8v or 16v.

    you need
    alternator bracket
    alternator
pas brackets from front & side of block
all fixings for the above, dont forget the stud on the side of the block
    belts

given the choice I'd go for early 8v setup with the large spring under the alternator, rather than the later/16v setup with the seperate tensioner pulley.

I have to admit that I have been considering this if i was going to keep the PAS as the ribbed belts seem like a great improvement.

I like PAS on the mk2 also, the manual is harder to park, my gf couldnt do it!

on the track didnt find much difference caught slides with both.
the PAS has a quicker ratio easier for hairpins!
    nice feel to it too.
the non PAS it proper go kart like though which is fun.

Eventually getting round to sorting this all out on my 16v!!! [:$]

I have come across a Mk3 Gti which I can buy what I think all the parts I need off (Exclduing the crankshaft pulley I think) Would someone be able to confirm for me that this is what I need as I am buying it remotely?

yup everything off that mk3 is what you need, except the crank pulley. all the bolts and nuts etc are also required. basically you want the guy left with a bare block, and the waterpump will fall off as well since you';ll need all the bolts/studs that hold it on. plus the waterpump pulley, tho prob easier for seller to just chuck that in with everything rather than attempt to remove...

He has offered me the whole engine for 150, but i am trying to get it for 100. Still more than i want to pay really, but I am happy to pay a bit more for the convienience.

Going to contact a local scrap yard later on this week to see if they have anything suitable in stock for me. If not i may keep haggling him with the engine.:p
