sounds ignition switch related to me. do you notice clock warning lights go dead while its cranking and come back on when key released?

if you unplug switch get a thick bit of wire and loop it from the black to the red to switch on ignition, then another bit from red to red/black to crank it over. if it fires right up like this, new switch!

It is tight but you should be able to lift top half of surrounding up enough, but think there are tabs each side that hold the two half's together, mine is off at the mo will have a look tomorrow when home. It is tight but does come off

See picture above, there are three tabs on the lower half so you need a sharp tug to pull the bottom half off, the the top half stays where it is but just lift it up and bend it up a bit, pull the stalk assembly towards you a bit enough to tilt it down, I assume you have undone the two screws that also hold the two halves together. Then 3 block connectors and mfa connector need to be disconnected.
