    Hi All,

Mates got an A3 1.8t 180bhp, and lately its been having random starting problems...

basically, it turns over fine but doesn't fire up......then eventually after about 30 secs it kicks in fine and you get a ton of smoke out the exhaust and the smell of petrol...

any ideas what this might be???

It normally happens after the car has been warm, but can happen from cold I believe....he said it was also scanning the revs a couple of times, going up to 2k then dropping and hunting a bit...if that has anything to do with it..

    any help appreciated...

    Rich

First things first, get the car checked on vag-com for any faults or codes. I can do that for you but depends where you are as am in Croydon,Surrey

    Hope this helps

As above get the fault codes read.
Sounds like the coolant temp sender, maybe the throttle body??

If you've got to fill it full of fuel to get it to start, it sounds like the cold start isn't working. As Philip suggests, I'd assume that's done with a temp sensor on those, via the ECU.

Plugs, leads etc all worth a check too. I guess it won't have a dizzy on that model.

I am having similar problems with my 2.0 Bora but normally only when I have had A/C on. Took it back to garage (non VW) under warrenty and they couldn't find owt wrong. Going back and forwards now and they wont send it to a VW garage so might just give up and take it myself then take it back and tell them whats wrong.

    Interesting...

he doesn't need the car full of fuel to have the problem, it happens whenever.....

he has a dicky temp guage that only works randomly on the clocks....maybe something to do with it maybe??

The symptoms you have suggest the coolant sender
The coolant senders are a very common fault on all recent VW/Audis, changed loads
Fairly cheap and easy to fix around 30

Will be coil packs or an air leak in a vacuum pipe......also check the fault codes for the lambda probe....if it is doing this alot it may have fecked the CAT...

    Hello FK

Thetemperature sender on these engines works by allowing extra fuel to be added on cold satrt up like a thermoswitch on K Jet engines. If the sender is not functioning within its limits it will fail and canbe a cause of the problem-not necessarily the only fault though.

    Get it checked

    Regards

    Cheers guys thats great......

is the sender you are talking about the same one that feeds the temp sender on the dials on the dash?

Will get it checked out asap and let him know!
