Just thought I would share this with everyone on here. Last week I had the front turrets raised by 40mm with MK5 Golf camber adjustable top mounts, I had the top plate bolt holes elongated to allow caster adjustment too. After doing this the wish bones now sit level even with a decent drop in ride height so should hopefully make a big difference to handling. I'm taking it to Croft next month so I'll soon find out. 1 slight issue is that I had to raise the bonnet to clear the new turrets but this isn't an issue as it's for my track car, Iv'e had a few people on Facebook ask about these so I'm getting them priced up but in 30mm which should be ok for a standard road car. Cheers
Liking the raised turrets but that doesn`t affect the wishbone angle at all. It helps position the damper in it`s travel better though Can't you just cut away part of the bonnet inner skin to give you more clearance?
The welding looks top notch and very neat.....not a pigeon in site. Always nice to see a bit of home brew that would be at home on a competition car and that a scrutineer would look at and be happy with.....Very neat fabrication Mayor.
Thanks for sharing your work on here. I like the grassroots thinking behind your modifications. Proper function over form modification! Loving how you made the TDI powerplant look at home in there too!
Because the Bonrath bearing for the top mounts are not available anymore, and they have a specific shape (middle of the bearing is thicker than the outside), I recently bought a set of KW camberplates for my MK2. Now I'm looking on how to mount them, and if I just place them under the original struts it looks like the top of the strut will be lower in the car, in other words the ride height will go up. I have a set of of KW v2 mounted, but if I adjust the ride height on them the pre-load on the springs will be gone. I don't really understand that part, but it seems to me that pre-load is there for a reason. So lowering the car with the springs would mean the springs would be loose in the strut on outgoing movements. Somebody put the idea in my head to heighten the topmounts in the car, and then I just found this topic. Why did you heighten them by 40 mm? And how did you measure the lot, so the camberplates are mounted straight, orientated/ rotated straight or at least mirrored between left and right? The plates with the slotted holes, did you have them drawn and machine milled?
Finally found some time to do the measurements on my GOlf and to keep the same ride height I would need to increase the towers with at least 45 mm + top plate of 4 mm thick That's even more than this TS...
