HI Guys, i stripped the golf for some paint work a while back and the bitumen on the insulation material was just splitting so i decided to bin it and replace it. I have been looking at using 15mm thick wool type material but wondered what other people were using if they were replacing the old stuff? thanks Craig
This could be an option https://newtoncomm.co.uk/collection...lf-mk2-3-door-saloon-underfelt-insulation-kit
yeah i did look at that but winced at the price! the local carpet fitter has some rubber backed felt at 10mm thick, hes got a 5m roll of it left over from another job so i'll have that and make one up i think. can always copy the instructions from the Newtons Commercials site
yeah i bought a load of stuff from ebay and made my own, helps if you have the old stuff to draw round!
Rubber backed quilt should do fine, you want the density/unit area to be comparable to the o.e. stuff to give optimum NVH without weighing too much/stifling performance and equally rotting if ever exposed to muck/water etc. Having said that I never noticed it when belting along (with or without) maybe the heater was slightly better with it in and sound of gravelly stones was slightly less on country lanes!
Just picked up some new carpet underlay/insulation from the local carpet shop, £15 for 5 meters. Latex style backing and nice thick wooly goodness. Should do the job really well in replacing the old Bitumen stuff
looks like the same stuff I used pretty much, I also used thinner material to replace the smaller pads which sit under the bitumen pads and over the dash shell
