I understand that roll cages, appart from helping to keep the occupants of the car alive also stiffens the chassis and improves 0-60 times as well as handleing. Is this all correct Could anyone reccommend some manufacturers and what type of cage should I go for and how much do they generally cost, I don't really want to spend more than 500.
Now that Safety Devices have gone under, it's probably cheaper to look to the european manufacturers as the rest if the UK suppliers are geared to low volume. AAT have a good range and know VW's.
A good cage will help with the handling but cant see it making the car faster 0-60 (thats more down to the driver) Weld in cages are the best, bolt in's are ok but you will still get movement where the cage is bolted to the car. wow that is areally good price! I was expecting them to cost a heck of alot more than that and it looks like a really professional job too. I will definately get in contact with them today!
Yeah there cheap but its a big DIY job to fit them. You get a kit like this, then spend the next 2 days gutting and grinding all the joints but its worth it in the end.
2 Days Graham! Mine took up my sundays for the best part of 6 months if you include the seam welding and shell prep. Fabrication skills are a must and the ability to weld helps!!
Told you to work harder at the time Ray . Took 2 days to get the main cage in (2 of us working on it) but seam welding and shell prep will take longer, depending how far you want to go.
I would of thought that the stiffened chassis would reduce flex and improve standing starts for say the 1/4 mile, where you are constantly under accelleration?
Well... How do I put this... Weight distribution, front-to-rear, on accelaration really has not so much to do with the chassis stiffness then with suspension stiffnesss... Hard accelaration does not flex the chassis as such, it more like pushes the rear wheels down/lifts the front wheels up... So it should be just about the only thing that wouldn't matter on a 0-60... On the other hand, as it improves the torsional stiffness of the car dramatically, it should make a world of difference on track times/cornering. It should also let you open and close the doors when one wheel is on the pavement and the others on the road
