    `but suggesting its part time 4x4 i dont understand`

Just my interpretation from the stuff I have recently been told and read.

Initially I was against the idea of ordering the R32 until I `knew` for sure how the drive worked.

Went for the R32 after reading the VW USA version of 4MOTION (50/50 variable) but before reading the HALDEX version on the Tiscali R32 site.

    No matter it`s here now.

    Thanks for the info....

one thing thats puzzling me is that it says the centre diff is by the rear axle. so does that mean drive is sent from the engine to the centre diff then back to the front wheels ( and onto the rear diff).

or is it as i suspect the front wheels would be driven in the conventional FWD manner straight from the gearbox and drive is sent via a transfer box to the centre diff then onto the rear wheels.

the text claims it can shift torque 100% either end of the car which would be impossible if its set up as my second paragraph. it would only be able to do 100% front wheel drive or 50/50

Recently looked into the new Volvo V70R - this uses a HALDEX to give AWD and from the diagram there is a transfer from the gearbox to a rear `diff` presumably incorporating that clutch. All electronically controlled.
    - as in your second statement.

This is why I previously classed the HALDEX as part time 4WD. FWD until slip takes place - like the old Cavalier ?

Cheers for the tonne of info! A bit beyond me but at llong as it works and grips like mad, I'm happy.
Talking of perm 4wd I saw a classic Audi Quattro Sport (the short ultra quick one) today in the Docklands (where I nowm live)- What a beauty!
My Dad had three Quattros (turbo but not sport) in the 80s, the last was a full blown Treser version - Boy did that grip!

yeah it is exactly like the 4x4 cav setup. but that is driving all 4 wheels all the time. its just the actual division thats computer controlled.

so do we have agreement on whether the under standard road conditions the drive is distributed 50/50 or 100% at the front?

Also it would be possible to transfer 100% drive to the rears if the fronts at absolutely zero traction and the rear had 100 % traction eg front wheels on black ice and the rears on dry tarmac.

    uh huh.
    s3!
just a tiny little slower to 60, but the r32's power to weight is much better so you'd expect that.
but the s3 is soooo much better looking and just has more "class" imo.

    I'm still trying to decide.
Wife likes the R32 more, I'm more into the S3.
Joint directors of our company so it has to be a 50/50 decision.
    Either will do thoguh.

If you're joint directors and it has to be 50/50, get one of each.

Just cos your joint directors surely can't mean you've got to agree on everything for anything to happen?

Walk past an Audi garage (Docklands Audi) twice a day so good for a gawp!
RS6s (maybe in a year or two) sound gorgeous.
Slight problem with the S3 - Sounds a bit dull.
Do prefer the image, looks and badge though.
    Hmmmm....
