hey guys hope someone can shed some light on this!?! when I start my golf from cold it makes this unhealthy noise... Some of you wrote back saying it 's probably the starter motor. So I had it checked by vw and they said yeah we'll stick a new one in(under warranty!). but the next morning I started it up and there it was again!? just wondering if anyone else has had this!? [:s]

  2. Yeah, I had the same trouble. VW said the same to me, replace the starter motor. But had a feeling it wasn't that, as it does start...

Please do me a favour and keep me updated on any outcomes with this, and I will do the same for you.

I posted earlier today here: my post, do you get the other issue I described?

    Thanks, Chris

Problems with the flywheel can cause a noise on start up

could be the flywheel you dont say what engine you've got some of the later aum code engines have a dual mass flywheel which are pretty poor

Hey Gary it's a gti 1.8 turbo 03 plate.. it's got 32 thousand on the clock..

if its an 03 its more than likely got a dual mass flywheel, i had a similar problem to be honest my local vw dealers weren't worth a w~~k i used a local specialist in the end,
i think he removed the starter and inspected the flywheel that way i think it was to much movement in the seperate plates of the flywheel all this dual mass stuff is a bit of a mystery to me

    Yo

supposedly it was the cam chain tensioner and the oil pump..... but i haven't had it back yet so can't say for sure.

    peace out

never heard of that one on the 1.8t but yeah on the 1.2 + 1.4 engines

but when i work at merc's we had a similar fault with the V6 making a noise on start up, merc's issued us with a special graphite grease to stick onto the ring gear, this instantly stopped any noises

    poss the same

If it sounds like a kind of 'growling' noise for about a second only on cold startup then I would say it could well be the starter motor.

Ours has done it for the last couple of years and still starts fine but the noise is getting more frequent (not just the mornings).

I know that the mk4 starters do suffer from this problem, I believe it is the solenoid slightly sticking on startup so I believe.

We are not going to replace ours until it starts to have any slight issues starting which I've been told you will know when to definetly change it (not that it won't start at all;) ) as it will struggle to start before actually giving up.

It could be another problem but it does sound like it could be the starter.

    Hope this helps.:)

didnt read this post sorry

    teach me for quick reading

yeah does sound like it could be the tensioner for the chain linking the 2 cams

    Hey oak8vgti!!
thanks again for the response! I'm just wondering if they are replacing the tensioner for the chain under warranty.. and I were to have the cam belt serviced at the same time would you still have to pay for labour on that??

hi mate, if they are removing the cams to replace the chain (not sure if you have too) then just pay for the belt and tensioner as the belt will have to come off anyway, but you'd have to ask them but no reason why they shouldnt
