A really strange fault has appeared on my 91 Mk2 Golf 8V Digi that I've never even heard of.

A mechanic friend I use was doing the clutch for me and I went round last night to collect car, however when he started the car it cut out on him and would'nt restart. He took all the plugs out to find fuel in cylinders 1 & 3. When the engine was turned over fuel would stream out of the spark plug gap in cylinder 3, it was like a small stream!

We think it could be the following but it was late last night to make further progress:

    Fuel regulator?
    Dodgy Injector?
    Even ECU?

    Any ideas?

Has anyone ever had this strange problem before?

    Cheers

Sounds like he missed an earth strap off the gearbox when refitting and it has blown the ecu.

    Hi Will,

Yeah we thought that too, but all earth straps were bolted back, not hard to miss them really.

Everything all double checked and clipped in, may just be a strange coincidence its after gearbox removal as I cant see how they could be linked ( other than earth strap )

    Cheers

Ive done a clutch on a digi 8v before and bolted all the earth back on with the ECU disconnected and it still got blown as soon as i turned the ignition on.

Easy way to know if your ECU has gone is when you turn the ignition on, does the main pump prime and stop? or does it keep running? If it keeps going then the ECU is cream crackered.

has it had the wrong box earth fitted? on my 90spec i replaced the box earth but didnt realise at scrappy there were 2 kinds. the early type that earths to the upper gearbox bracket, and the late type that earths to a stud on the end of the rear engine -> gearbox mounting bolt. you should have the late type on your car and i narrowly avoided a blown ecu in my car due to fitting the early type.

look at mk3 golfs in the scrapper and you'll see what i mean, id upgrade to mk3 battery cables while you're there much better. only thing is you need to make a short earth strap from the stud on the battery tray to the battery -ve as the mk3 ring doesnt quite reach. and swap over the old blue alternator cable
