It was sunny today and after a healthy motorway blast my sister saw this:

I'm trying to give advice from afar - I reckon the grease cap has fallen off.

It looks like some of the grease has made a bid for freedom.

What grease is best for re-packing and how much should be in there?

If it’s the bearing then use multipurpose bearing grease. Buy a tub from Halfords. Theirs is just sold as “multipurpose grease”. As to how much? You should really take the outer bearing out, give it a clean and repack it. Then smear everything, put it back in and then put some more in and some in the cover cap.

    Cheers Phil

More likely is my sister will buy some grease, knock cover cap off, pack under it and bonk the cap back on. Is this advisable or worth doing more properly?

I'd rather fix the cause of the leak rather than the symptom but if it's not serious then it can wait.

Yes, take the cap off, clean up and put back. However, if the grease has got to that point then I would suspect it has broken down for a reason. Are you sure the bearings are OK?

They are nice wheels by the way, what are they from?

Cool will get her to pack + hope. She said no unusual noises from the bearing while driving so hoping it could be down to badly fitting cap and a motorway run.

Wheels are OEM 14 inch steelies from GTi / drivers (I think) - shot blasted and powder coated at a local place. My favourite wheels - cheap but getting harder to find these days. Also great for powder coating - don't have to worry about good baking process as much as alloys ;)

    Cheers

could just be old grease, loose cap. could be worn bearing, overheating. 1st option re-pack done. 2nd option, wheel may fall off so you really need to be sure its not that
