Next year, if my MK2 makes it that far I want to strip the interior bare as the shell is fairly good. However got 4 questions regarding doing this: 1) What do you need to keep in the car by law or for an MOT in the car? 2) How badly does stripping a car affect insurance prems? 3) What is the appropiate level of stripping a car? E.g. roof lining, carpets, dash? 4) How much roughly could i save on weight doing whatever people suggestfor question 3)?
My advice would be 'don't bother'. It's not worth it for the weight saving, compared to the extra noise, cold, vibration and general discomfort. Stick a bigger engine in it. You need seats, belts and speedo for the MOT I think.
That is true! Other then those, every thing else must go... if your intending to strip it that is! Literally u dont want a single thing left in there, or there is no point in doing it really. Im guessing if you do a proper job of it u could loose at least 100kg.. may be wrong though. Does anyone know the weight of a standard MK1 gti, 'cos my bro's stock hatch mk1 now weighs 855kg, so you could roughly work it out from that. That weight still includes the door cards however, required for the regs. so maybe 5kg less. on second thoughts i cant remember whether 855kg was with or without the driver?? ... i can find out
Ithought the mk1 started at that weight before stripping out? but yes the interior & sound proofing weighs 90-100kgs in a mk1 (done this a few months back).
855kg..... with driver then! So minus another 90kg or there abouts. one might say stripping out is like loosing then driver then!
dont get it - whats the point? - surely not gonna be doing trackdays in a 1.3 mk2? Save up for a gti. Cheers Dan
Nah, next year I should hopefully be getting a company car for the miles. But as a mess around, I wanted to strip the car to see how much a difference it makes. The 1.3 is not too bad, but will struggle to do 60mph is less than 15sec! The 1.3 suffers with an extra passenger and loads. Just wanted to strip it bare and use it as a little weekend run around for B road journeys, as it will either be scrapped otherwise. If I strip it, I can sell the parts that I take off, to earn a little . Plus It'll save me fuel, tires..... I know if I wanted a track car, it'll cost me lots of , Stripping the car is more just to see how the car behaves being lighter. If I can stand the noise, and if the shell is still in good condition i'll slot a standard 1.8 8v mk2 GTi engine in, even though i'll have to sort out the wiring loom and gearbox, but they're going cheap now! If its guna end up in the scrap yard.... then do it i'd say!! For one it'll give you some good experience if you were thinking of getting into trackdays later on, both doing the strip and knowing what its likedriving a stripped out car. Also, it'll give you something to brag about to your mates!! Seeing a stripped out car is alwayspretty cool... what ever it is! straying away slightly..... cometbluecoupe, i'm intrigued as to what a polo coupe looks like..... dont think i've ever seen one, or i was stoned n cant remeber it! Got a pic?
Yeah, want to get a track car when i'm a wee bit older. Just want to have the feeling of having an empty car, which is lightweight and responsive (handling wise, not power!). Plus I might make some good money by breaking the interior. I saw a 1.0 mk4 polo with its guts stripped out, it turned heads as people thought it was actually a track car-until he booted it against a Ka! On the other topic, you've never seen a Polo Coupe??? The mk2's are getting rarer, esp in his blue! There's plenty around on the cheap-look at www.porka.net I had a mk2 1.0L squareback-best fun I've had in years! Edited by: G-Man
Well yes the Mk2 is more weighty than the Mk1 but the Mk2 shells are that much stronger, Cost less and its easier to find a good example. I paid 230 for the one in the picture.
