There's plenty out there. Do a web search, post pictures, and I am sure lots of people will have lots of different opinions.

My SAAB Sport had a works sump shield, actually a skid plate cos. it was a 2 stroke so no sump.
It was 6mm thick aluminium with rolled in corrugations, and a curved up front.
I used it on my V4 SAAB rally cars and it was bullet proof.
Bent a few steel wheels though!

I have a lot of experience of sumpguards, from years of autocross, rallycross and rallying.
    Two main things to consider;
the guard and the mounting system (sorry of this is too obvious)
The guard can be any lump of ali or checker plate you can lay your hand on (even seen a road sign being used)
    8mm is my preferred thickness.
I tend to use 5mm thick 30*30 angle for the frame.
Do not underestimate how strong it has to be. Use M10 bolts , not 8's
The mk2 is reasonably straight forward, I always use the lower sway bar for the rear mount. Heavy gauge 1" square tube, cheap, easily replaceable.
Always think about the sides and box in
You must be able to throw a trolley jack anywhere under it and jack the car up, if it bends its not strong enough
    Hope this of some help
    Jon

mushy have you guard on because mark fours are known for creaking sumps when lowered or do you use this car for motor sport

Here's a pic of my MK2 night event car's sump guard.

The rear bolts are drilled through the sub rear sub frame, the front has a 1" steel box welded to the front subframe with captive bolts welded in. Probably 5mm plate, had a hard life, seems to work. The guys I purchased the car off said don't worry about rocks and boulders just head for them, the sump guard will sort them our., so I guess its ok.

The ones you buy may well not be great value and I would seriously have a go at making it yourself.
I used a new mk2 escort kit cut down years ago for my mk1 and was not really happy with the result

    As Jon says^

I buy a lot of Escort bits off rally design and adapt them, this sound like its tried and tested - sounds like a good start. Of course depends on what kit you have available but with a welder and disc cutter you can do most things :) . The basics are all there just need chopping about a bit. Normally far cheaper to buy a similar looking kit of parts than buying all the components yours self.

Their 4 link kits can be used for all sorts, it's essentially a Golf MK1 Tubular wishbone set in kit form ;)

As Tony says, with the escort stuff they have a larger market, so can up the volumes.
