    Hi

Girlfriends Golf has gone into limp mode. Turbo isnt kicking in all the time. 190k on the clock is it time to scrap it? Or is a new turbo the only option?

    Car: 1.9l 115PD Diesel

Help! Not worked on an oil burner before.

RJ - check the N75 valve (bulkhead) as this controls the turbo actuator via a vac pipe.

If it feels like it's running without a turbo all the time then could be a dead MAF or an air leak in the boost system

EGR Valves also get very gummed up on these engines and sometimes the inlet too - needs either deleting or cleaning every 40k miles - more frequently with supermarket fuel.

You can check by logging whilst driving the car, requested boost vs actual.
Possible that the vane ring is sooted up preventing them moving.

Need to check if there is smoke when turbo cuts out, if there is then n75 or stuck vane/actuator, if its clean then maf. Test by unplugging maf, if no difference then its the maf.
Boost leak possible but you'd hear it.
    MAF is most common.

Some good info there - Yeah the N75's just tend to go, not exactly sure how and why though as I've changed mine a couple of times for new parts as VW revise them.

115 engine code will most likely be AJM

I'd go for airflow meter everytime, common problem, don't always show up on vagcom though

Had that quite a few times on Galaxy with 115pd engine - boost goes over upper limit on hard accel. , engine shuts down, re-start car runs ok again until hard accel.

it dose the same if it under boost's it a real pain when overtaking
you can move the vanes manually to free them off
as gary said if (engine shuts down, re-start car runs ok again) it more than the vanes sticking or the N75

right, so unplug maf and see if things change, check.
check for smoke when turbo cuts out, if so then n75 or stuck vane/actuator, check

stuck vane/actuator, wheres this then? we talkign about pop boost piep off turbo and wiggling vanes inside it wqith a bit of penatrating oil?

I'm a diesel noob as you've probably gathered

Vanes are possibly the most awkward part in the engine bay to get to, inside the turbine housing around the turbine. Turbo is at the back of the engine, below the inlet manifold and above the driveshafts! Turbo and exhaust manifold are one piece.
Not a 5 minute job whatsoever.

Actuator comes straight out the central part of the turbo, could try applying vacuum to it, or disconnecting the lever to it and seeing if the lever moves freely.

None of this you want to be doing on a winter evening on your drive. You can tell usually from vagcom results anyway.

right i certainly wont be doing that
I did find a how2 guide on stripping the turbo down, bit beyond the scope of an evenings quick testing in the dark!
found and printed off reams of usefull information from the tdi club forums, which has helped me understand all the usefull advice you have all given me. I shall get on the case and see whats occurin'

my guess is split boost hose or stuck open EGR valve

as for those vanes you should be able to move the actuator arm with some long nose pliers

but definately see what vagcom says first

funily enough the car started boosting ok on the trip to my house, and a plug into vag-com revealed no fault codes.

so my guess was sticky vanes or actuator or something. didn't really get a look under the bonnet as it was proper lashing it down and it was dark by then!
