So a couple of weeks ago, I got an offer that I couldnt refuse

Swapped the white golf for an immaculate mars red, 1984 GTI on an A plate that has had a respray.

The catch - its in bits and hasnt seen the light of day for about 8 years.

    The mk2 before

    Bye white mk2

At the moment the engine runs, and I have had new discs and pads and handbrake fitted. Also have about 2 large boxes of bits I have bought for the car.

    As it arrived

Today I spent a couple of hours on it, swapping over to the original 7 slat grille, fitting original rear lights, and all the rear carpets and trim.

Also sprayed the welded section in red.

Picked up a complete full interior for an early GTI from Mushy, so this will go in until I save up for recaros

Plan is to have the majority of the car built by friday this week, as most parts have come with the car or I have bought. Will be completely machine polished, undersealed, with new bushes, track roads, wishbones etc etc. Wiring is going to be a bit of a headache as the lights and wipers dont work :thumbd:

Looks like a great base for a nice car. How old an A reg is it?

Also the wheels - what are they? They ape Scirocco Scala wheels nicely, with a good increase in size!

The car was first registered 9th March 1984, so must have been one of the very first made.

Wheels are 1552 RML snowflakes in 16x8, so a little bigger than standard haha

Very good, the outward bending spoke is a nice touch.

Early car too. When's yours Lee? Did an earlier one turn up?

Some updates from today, but not very exciting or picture friendly I'm afraid.

Did a full service today - amazing how dirty the spark plugs were and how rusty the coolant was [xx(]. Now starting first time and running nice and smooth.

Changed the gear linkage as well, which was a nightmare of a job, but it means that first and reverse wont be confused . Did find that the kinked bar with the kit caused that reverse not to engage, so this was swapped back over for the standard part.

Inside floors were hammerited red and interior is in! Including G60 leather wheel and adaptor

And can anyone tell me if this is the right type of seat belt for the front? Dunno how they are mounted, especially the long rod

Also found I am missing a few parts, so if anyone has the following let me know:-
A and B pillars in black.
    Interior door pulls.
    A lock kit and key
Rubber exterior trim that goes over the roof
    Ashtray

    Cheers for viewing :)

any mk2 will do, but 3 and 5 door belts are different!
edit: unless earlies didnt get the height adjustible front belts? if not then you'll need early if the later adjusters dont fit the B pillars

Cheers for the help and comments guys!

And I know they should have the four button wheel, but like the feel of the leather g60 one. If an italvolanti or bbs wheel ever appeared at good money then it'll go in.

Looks tidy. Has it survived the Aberdeen salt all it's life or is it not a local find?

If late mk1 seat belts are the same I have a full set here I removed from a car.

Danster - I will try and find out whether they are, as I'm in desperate need of them.

Aiming to have the car mot'd by next friday!

And SMP - never knew the campaign wheels were leather - will defo look into them!

Ordered up some new number plates in 80's font last night - hoping they will be with me tomorrow or saturday.

New locks are also on order

My arches arrived today, so fitted these along with the vinyl decal along the side

And metal strips for the handles

    More tomorrow :)

Danster - car has been in aberdeen most of its life, but the past 8 years its been hiding in a garage, hence the good nick.

SMP - smart golf! Love the bbs bodykit. Wag lines will be on after the car is fully machined. Also need to find some of those GTI badges for the side
