Is it just me or does anyone else HATEEE working on the daily driver? The Land Rover is throwing up suspension faults, got another split bag, valve blocks need rebuilding etc But I cannot bring myself to do it, so I’m driving the god awful 1.0 2021 Skoda Fabias we have at work around, I hate it, just a tad less than fixing my own car.
If it's just routine servicing/maintenance then no but if stuff actually breaks then that can be pure ballache. My wife had an XC90 before the GLC and one front wheel bearing and the haldex started giving trouble - both were complete ball ache to fix - I had to buy a sledgehammer to beat the bearing out due to corrosion. I had to replace the motor, oil, and filter on the haldex and the sheer lack of room and space to get at those things was a nightmare. I don't miss that Volvo.
Feel your pain. My misses has a Range Rover Sport and it’s just so big and heavy. Even getting it jacked-up is a full on Vietnam trip. And then those ridiculous 22” wheels weighing about 100kgs each and I’m spent. Everything’s rusty and knackered and every time I make a single fix by the time I’m finished 2 more things have broken. Just kiss the Fabia every night before bed.
I think it depends upon the time/cost ! Just had to get someone to remove and reverse flush the DPF on the Octy Scout. That was expensive but too big a job for me on the drive.
I dont even open the bonnet on mine. Straight to MINI it goes if it needs owt. I did the front pads on my wife's X1 but that was only because of the ridiculous price that BMW wanted. No magic/fun to be had working on a newish daily.
I am a massive fan of the Skoda’s, my last car was a Superb. It was, superb. But my off roading itch hasn’t been fully scratched yet. I will probably sell the Landy when the golf is running and then decide what to do with the Golf. My commute is 10 minutes max now so I can survive in the old Golf for a month or so
I would still lose the Land Rover and get a different 4x4 Sam - a work colleague of mine has an older Range Rover, and it's a money pit. (That said he isn't a DIY head so he gets a good thrashing from the garages).
Whereas I, am.. so it doesn’t cost me much, it’s the first time it’s really gone wrong in 6 months and 10k. I secretly love it, like reaalllyyy like it. More than I probably should tbh
I like the older G-Wagens (not today's blinged out uber expensive ones) I reckon those things can pretty much take anything thrown at them.
I do. It’s 20 years old I did the front valve block this morning. The internet says you need to remove the wheel, arch liner and all sorts, undo 2 bolts and fold it back, you have access. Many seals, including a few hidden ones. All back together, ready to go back in.
I did our "family" Mk2 Kuga rear brakes on Monday in stupid heat. Bought it, did a 2017 Powershift gearbox Conversion because original was full of plastic, service it and very rarely drive it. I personally cycle to work all year. Hey ho!.
my daily is a 55 plate Merc E280 CDI, to be fair its a great car, but i agree i really hate fixing it. Its 18 years old has 162k on it, its a reliable car, parts are expensive, and touch wood there isn't much wrong with it (only one folding mirror doesn't fold AFAIK), its actually pretty easy to work on, but i get so pi55ed off having to work on it.
I binned the daily and just drive one of the golfs. Never the same car twice is the rule - keeps the moving and the fuel fresh.
^^^ like your thinking but having driven my black mk2 with black leather to work today in 30deg heat I think I'd last about 3 days with it as a daily.
Well… I’ve been a bit busy so next up was changing my air bag over. 3 nuts that didn’t look hexagonal anymore. Meaning I had to get the oxy out and just turn them into liquid. The 225mm bottom bolt I thought was going to be seized wasn’t, so that was a bonus!
