It leaves plenty of scope for improvements in the future though -remember the first 1.8T only had 150bhp but the TT soon came along with 225 from the same lump.

Damn VW want a lot for that! They've having a laugh aren't they?

I priced one up for 20,490, and still felt it was too much. The only thing I added was a electric sunroof. 395 for a 6 CD auto changer, pull the other one. You can get a decent Sony 10 CD for 120.

Y the hell would anyone want "heated windscreen washer jets"??? VW are putting on the toys, for the sake of it.

So much for the next "real" GTI [:s]

    Cheers

Dont yours ever freeze in the winter then???

The base price isnt too bad, but the options prices are horrendous, but as Rob said, the options prices are actually a bit cheaper than their mk4 golf counterparts.

    Edit:-
Oh and its 0-60 in 7 secs.

oh, and this is all coming from extensive experience from having sat nav and leather equipped cars now is it? If you cant afford it, then just say so, dont give bullsh1t excuses on how you'd rather not have stuff when you probably would. So you'd have an M3 with a cloth interior would you also? Or a Bently with cloth? Nah, didnt think so mate. And my leather interior actually stops me from having a cold arse in winter - I just turn up the heated seat and enjoy. If I'm hot in the summer - I use my Air Con to cool me down. ;) ;) ;)

And on the mk5 being heavier, believe me - it feels 10 times lighter than a mk4 when you're chucking one round corners compared to a similar spec mk4, really has a good chassis. GTI should be a stormer - wait for the EVO verdict then go for a drive is what I say before anyone puts it down.

Maybe you should drive a mk5, then you'll see where the money has gone into it, rather than a lardy mk4 with decent quality materials for interiors, I would have though everyone on here wanted a car thats better to drive maybe?

If VW paid attention to forums like this, the new GTI would have a mk2 shell, mk4 interior, 1.8T engine, and cost 10. Not going to happen.

the new GTI looks good from the front, but i dont like the back. Im sure it'll grow on me though, i remember when i hated the mk4, and now i'd really like one!

My spec came to 24k.. not that bad.

R32 is my first car with leather and I LOVE it!
Just the smell of it is good enough for me.
Does make your arse sweat though but only if you're naked

The fact that you can wipe clean helps too! And the fact that it looks 'quite' good! ;)

I've sat in a mk5 GT with leather, and it was nice, good quality like audi leather almost. Was v nice.

Done a bit of window shopping to see what else you get for circa 20k (including discounts), these are real deals offered to me today, the VW dealers I spoke to about a GTi all said the same - no discount:

    Alfa 147 GTA - 19,900
    Civic Type-R - 15,400
    Lexus IS200 Sport - 20,000
    RX-8 192ps - 19,200
Mini Cooper S Works - 18,100 (full list - no discount)
    Mitsibushi Evo 8 260 21,200
    Megane Renaultsport 225 3dr - 17,700
    Leon Cupra R - 16,300
    Impreza WRX - 17,800
    Volvo S40 T5 - 21,000
    Saab 9-3T Aero - 20,800

Would you still buy a Golf GTi when you could have any of the above ?????

VWs being expensive isn't a new thing... they still sell in their
millions because when you come to sell it it'll still be worth
    something

 No contest! Sod the Golf, buy a RX-8 instead. Looks better, and won't be common as muck within a couple of year like the mk5 will be. Bloody sales reps [:x]

RX8 handles very well but has no torque and drinks oil and fuel like a Challenger tank.
I suspect the new hot mk5s will actually be very good, despite the pre pasting from all you VW "fans" ;) [8(]

Alfa 147 GTA - 19,900 ..... Bad reliability issues etc
Civic Type-R - 15,400 ..... Drien one - quick at high revs, but not great down below
    Lexus IS200 Sport - 20,000 ..... Dont think so!
RX-8 192ps - 19,200 ..... Still undecided on looks! And engine has been slatted for fule economy and oil usage
Mini Cooper S Works - 18,100 (full list - no discount) ..... Great fun, but everyone and their dog has one
Mitsibushi Evo 8 260 21,200 ..... unbelievable expensive to run!
Megane Renaultsport 225 3dr - 17,700 ..... cant stand the look of these
Leon Cupra R - 16,300 ..... poor interior and lacks refinement
Impreza WRX - 17,800 ..... everyone, their dog, their cat and their grand mother has one. Plus styling is old hat now. Driven one and wasnt over impressed to be honest
    Volvo S40 T5 - 21,000 ..... erm... NO!
Saab 9-3T Aero - 20,800 ..... bit like an old mans car IMO

In regards to the above.... YES [:D]
