good afternoon last night when i went to reverse from outside my mates house, my car went back a bit, then just stopped dead (as it did when my gearbox ceized on my last one)so i rolled it forward and went back again.. same thing just a thud and complete stop, so i went forward and turned around a bit further up, no problems whatsoever and ive had no reversing problems since... yet on the drive home, having planted my foot in 2nd, there was a rather nasty grating sound, which sounds like something big and cog-ish rubbing on something it shouldnt?! infact this sounded an awful lot like when my mate knackered the prop shaft on his merc... which later snapped... this is much worse in 1st gear, and only really happens over 3000revs, and only when moving theres nothing hanging down under my car that shouldnt be, cant see any sign of any oil leaks, engine seems pretty secure (something similar happend in my vento and it was down to a broken engine mount) sounds like its coming from the middle slightly to the drivers side in the engine bay, perhaps just where the downpipe goes under the car.. there-ish now i know the silencer that comes after the downpipe is blowing badly due to some crappy welding repair, and it looks as though it could have been tonked.. this could explain the sudden jolt and stop but why the grating?! in my vr6 i can drive normal without going to 3k in first and they are designed to have long gearing lol me thinks it could be your driving thats messing up ur cars
anyone got a useful answer? or does everyone drive like old people *make love*? personally i try to avoid using 3k in first - i hate letting the revs drop that far.
sounds like transmission related. But if in all gears, prob isnt the box. Can you get it up on a ramp anyway to look underneath, just to be sure?
alright could everyone stop slating my driving, it never goes above 3k until its at full temp, and then its very rarely in 1st! anyhaps, sounds like the grating is right near the pedals, it happens at lower speeds when going over bumps? and only really happens under hard acceleration otherwise, obviously not accelerating hard over bumps... you get the idea first person to say 'well dont accelerate hard then' gets a virtual slap ill try and get it on a ramp asap, just looking for a few ideas what it might be until i can...
id say its definately something hitting something, and fast left corners feel bloody awful, cars all over the place... so something suspension/steering related at a guess? and Rahul *slap* theres your slap and with regards to my driving, if i wanted to drive sensibly all the time i would have bought a slower car so shut up.
Err, no. Nothing to do with the synchros. They only mesh the gears together, they have no effect once it's in gear.
Can't offer any advice to the problem but let the man drive the car how he wants, its why he bought it to go quickly! Besides, why would the rev limiter be set so high if its dangerous to drive at anything above 3k... And why would the valver have peak torque after 3,000rpm??? Woman the lot of ya Regularly take my valver upto 30ish in first as its where most of the fun takes place in the lower gears Edited by: Mark16v
Even though Jolfa has a history of buying sh[/i]it cars and killing them, why are people acting like 3000 rpm is a lot? Are you sure you should be driving GTIs?
they're trying to wind him up....no one on this forum stays below 3k i bet! i don;t quite understand whats happening, can you be more precise jolfa?...but sounds like it may be clutch or diff dieing from what i can get.
Strange problem. I think you're really going to have to get it on a ramp and take a look. As for driving under 3krpm in first, what the f**k!! I regularly take mine to the limiter in 1st...
i dont really think i could be much more precise, somethings hitting the underside of my car under hard acceleration, and it takes left hand corners like a sack of poo
