I've been thinking of covering the parts of my rollcage that aren't
covered in padding in original VW vinyl, to match the interior trim in
an OE kind of a way. ie. black vinyl below the waistline, off white
    above to match the interior.

To set the scene, my mk1 polo has an off-white vinyl headlining, with a
leather-like embossed finish. I have plenty of the material spare. The
look I'm building the car towards is my vision of what VW would
have sold if they'd made a road/homologation version of the old group H
hillclimb cars. (ie. my car being to a competition mk1 polo what a
Rallye is to a competition Rallye )

    Ooh, it sounds just fabulous!

It could end up nice or it could end up looking silly. I'm not so keen when
the interiors of mk2 Golfs are fully leather trimmed (dashboard, A pillars,
etc), for example. To me it just stands out as not being in keeping with
the age and type of the car. I'd give it a try on a section of the cage and
    see how it looks.

I suppose the cage is fitted and it's too late to think about other finishes?
Satin black powder coat would be my choice.

Cage is fitted, and I was previously intending to pull it out again
and paint it satin black. My favourite paint finish:lol: (Its white at the moment)

This is until I got the white headlining next to it, and realised the cage would look odd in black against the white section...

Another reason for thinking about this is that the cage is a major
bitch to get in, and I'm certain to ruin any paint finish I put
    on it
in the process, whereas I can trim it in situ no problem.

Thinks its a great idea  saw a 996 GT2 Clubsport a while back which had the cage trimmed in black suede / alcantara to match the headlining it looked wicked, the quality of the stiching was superb, really helped blend the cage into the car

I hope you're going to use decent padding on the bits near your head, John!

Like the colour idea though [:D]

Yeah plenty of fat padding in use... Won't be any stitching though, I'm
not that clever, just hiding the seams on the far side of the tubing
    and using contact adhesive :)

I believe AstonMartin have done the odd roll cage in Connoly (sp?) hide. Should look good. Try Velcro on the bits you dont see, just incase some track type inspections require you to have that FIA approved stuff (thats hard as nails), you can replace it quickly.
