    Hi Folks,

I have a small query, I have had many VW's mainly MK1 & 2, I have noticed that in top gear they mainly do around the 20mph per 1000 revs?
I have an 89 GTI 8v which does 80 mph at 3000 revs and returns 40-45mpg?
Im curious as to if this is correct?
    What does everyone elses do?

    Ta

sounds right, the early GTIs had a close ratio box, they all had top speed of 110'ish

Fun to drive, but not good for 'modern' motoring!

I last drove my '90 8v GTI about 18 months ago but that was pulling about 3000 at 60 in top.

Makes for noisy motorway driving but great for overtaking......

maybe my clutch was on the way out.........

Both my Mk2 8v Gti's (I have an '88 small bumper and a '92 big bumper) do 80mph at 4000rpm in top gear. Your 20mph per 1000rpm sounds right.

Assuming you have a standard gearbox I would suggest there's a problem somewhere. I'm the wrong person to suggest where though. [:s]

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Need to verify the gearbox code, might have had either a replacement 5th gear ratio or even an incorrect gearbox fitted in the past.

Gearbox code stamped under the bell housing on the flat machined surface.

Mine is more like 3 500 RPM at 80 MPH. 3 000 RPM sounds a bit like a non-GTI gearbox or diff.

My old Scirocco GLi did the sort of 20 MPH per 1000 RPM you speak of and would go from 60 to 100 like greased weasel droppings ! Ahhhhh the good old days !

Well i thought it may have had a replacement top gear but it only seems to drop off 500 revs between 4th and 5th gear.
I could (top mounts allowing and plod) theoretically reach 120mph in 4th (ive had 110).
I can nearly touch 60 in 2nd and it pulls quick through the gears and ive done a couple of RS Turds up to 3rd gear on a strip. (legally you know ;) )
Its definitely the original box as it has been out and rebuilt and checked.
Im running 195/50/15,s with Sebrings so the rolling radius is about right.
Ive also checked the speedo and revs to make sure they are correct.
Im getting amazing mpg 40-45 at 70-90.
Its a one owner car before me for 10 years and ive had it nearly 5 with 167 thou and FSH.
It must be a good un.
So i should add a few BHP according to Max Power reckoning!!!!.

Over the redline! Yeah by about 1000rpm. If yours is a 4+E gearbox like mine, then that would have been ~7300rpm!

    Cheers

its the 020 4t box, and the engine is still running fine. as it hit 70 i thought oh f**k and started shifting up. what is the actual redline of the engine?

My 1.8 driver has a redline at 6250rpm, as does my dads 1.6 driver, so I would assume yours would be the same. Although peak power (75bhp) on the 1.6 is at 5000rpm.

    Cheers
