Tracing origin of 'import' Mk1?

When I bought my Mk1, the V5 and HPI paperwork said that it was originally used/registered outside of the UK. I'm guessing this isn't normal for a RHD? Is there anyway to trace the origins online or anything like that? It's an '83 Campaign.

It's more curiosity than anything else especially as I have history on the car dating back quite a few years.

 

bought by a RAF service man in germany?

Sounds plausible, but is there anyway of finding this out? Some dub database somewhere that has info on first registrations worldwide?

 

DVLA is your best bet, they may still have a copy of the foreign registration document
