What's the options with mymk1 as it has an after market tilt only sunroof fitted?

I will be puting a cage in it but is it worth worrying about a sunroof in one?

Iv'e noticed with some of the later fia approved ones they use a diagonal bar across the roof which would obviouslly cause problems.

Best thing to do is to cut all the mounting frame out of the roof, trim the sunroof itself, so it's just a panel, and weld it into the roof in a few places. Then seam sealer the gap.

Steve r did this a while back and I think he has photos in a photobucket somewhere.

Decision point comes when you order the cage: some are sunroof cages and they sit lower. Trouble is, if you take the s/roof out later, the s/roof cage looks lost sitting up there 1 inch away from the roof.

Sunroof cages are for factory sunroofs though, which give less headroom
than an aftermarket glass sunroof. I'd have thought you might get away
    with fitting a "non-sunroof" cage.

Yeah thinking about it it only takes up a small square & doesn't have the runners running back either what with it being tilt only.

was going to have a cross bar just above the windscreen & one just behind the sunroof.

Edit: any brown mark you see on the roof or around sunroof isn't rust, it's the glue i'm in the middle of removing.

Chris i wouldn't have to cut anything as from the looks when it was fitted it had the hole cut out of the roof then they pushed the top half of the sunroof (from outside) into the hole, then lifted the lower half (from inside) up against it with a rubber seal in between & screwed the 2 halfs together.

    So it's aftermarket?

Not so easy to patch up in the way I suggested, but might be a starter tho.

Chris i thought it would have been easier to patch up as there isn't as much to it as a factory fitted version?

It's one of those sunroofs we used to get fitted in Escort Bonus in '89 - Rueben used to come in the workshop, lay a cardboard template on the roof, attack it with a nibbler, trim the headlining, screw the sunroof in and be gone again within 30mins.

Get a sheeeeeeeet of carbon and cover it over :)

If you mean factory ones then you need to find a sunroof rollcage as the standard rollcage will get in the way.

Get rid of it if poss - sunroof cages have lower tubes across the door aperture and you'll bang your head off it.

It's only the factory fitted sunroofs that cause problems because of the runners, my tilt only one would be ok but im probablly going to get it filled in for safety reasons.

I am thinking about getting a non sunroof car, and just moving all the GTI bits over from my car. It will probably be cheaper in the long run that sorting the bodywork properly on this one.
