Ok, a very popular question no doubt but can anyone recommend a set of tyres for trackdays?

I'm not hugely bothered about massive grip - I just want a set that will survive and last a couple of track days. I've heard great things about the Toyo PXT1-S and the Eagle F1s... Any other thoughts..

Lastability and price are main concerns !

For price the Toyo T1-S or T1-R are good, although I find that on track they tend to melt a bit quick.

I'm going to be trying Colway Traxtars in a couple of weeks, they are really cheap and designed for track day use, their website is www.tyresdirect.co.uk

Also, if you want more seriousness then try Maxsports, they are semi slick but seem to be quite good in anything other than standing water. Lots of my Lotus freinds use these...

I use the Toyo T1-R and find it to be brilliant. I do mainly road miles with the occasional trackday. The T1-R is a bit harder than the T1-S but still provides roughly the same grip casue of the better tread pattern. As long as you don't have a really heavy car or drive like an idiot they last ok. I did about 8000 miles on my old T1-S's last year with probably at least about 100 track miles.

Toyo T1-R excellent for the monet........cheap as chips

I've been using the T1S for years on road and track

Similar levels of grip to Goodyear F1

Never tried the Toyo or Goodyears, but if you are talking just normal road rubber & not specific road leagal trackday type tyres, then part worn yoko A539s get my vote.

Always best not to take new tyres on track tho, I've destroyed a brand new new front in a day before.

The A539 I found were excellent in the dry......surpassed Toyo's but in the wet they lacked grip and induced understeer compared to the Toyo's.

As for a track Tyre Neil is running the Toyo track tyres on his 480+ Passat and is impressed with their value and grip.

I can also vouch for Dunlop Formula R's which are still going strong from last season out on track.

I've done 6 events on these so far and still plenty of tread

Have to agree that A539s are pretty poor in the wet. The Toyos make better all rounders....

Best it doesnt rain for me on Saturday (539s on my new car [:$] )

I was using Yoko 520's but recently I've started using my new toyo t1-s on my road wheels and found that the level of grip greatly increased. I think that on a really abrasive track they would fall apart though!

I melted a set of Toyo T1S on my old Porsche 924s in one day's track time at Brands last year, they beaded and all the loose rubber had to be scraped off before I could drive home !
They did give tenatious grip before they went off though ;)

Not all road tyres are crap...some are quite good Tubs.
F1's Bridgestone etc are pretty useful compramise.
Inters give slightly better grip 1-2 secs per lap quicker and you can drive to the circuit. It's all about the size of your wheels and the size of your budget.
Slicks give the ultimate dry grip for a track use but they place alot more load on suspension and transmission parts.

Slicks are good if your car is et up for them ie Poly Bushed all round etc

Eagle F1's and Toyos etc all fall apart on track.
A539's are very good - grip and last.
Bridgestone Potenza S-03 last forever on track and road but are not quite as gripp as the 539 (dry) and F1/Toy (wet).

Slicks rooooool as far as track only dry only tyres go - cheap and grippy and last.

He isnt on about Slicks though Tubs! ;)

Im sure most forum users who arent quite up to your level of driving would find Toyos or F1s a decent compromise :)

I think I'll try out a set of the yoko A539s then. I just hope it doesn't rain at the weekend!

I've been running on cheapo Kumho's so far and they've lasted 7 months driving, two track days and a trip to santa pod.

A539s went on Saturday and performed extremely well on Sunday at Donnington... top tyre! By the looks of the wear they'll last another 2-3 track days too!

I looked at the R888, but they don't do 195/50x15 yet, only 55s.

Camskill have them at a good price at the moment.
