I have just damaged my alloy & tyre on my new car, only 400miles on the clock and I drove up a drive and did this [:^(]
I've not gone near a curb for 5 years with my old car I do this in less than a week[:x]
Anyway, rant over. I'm just trying to work out if it's safe? It's a cut into the rim protector, but is about 2mm deep. I dont want to pay 130 for a new tyre unless it's real a danger.

    Thanks, Rich

I'm pretty sure it would pass MOT.

You want to be worried if it bulges out or has exposed threads

I'd keep driving on it and just keep a regular eye on it for the first few miles to make sure it doesn't bulge!

Looks like a Continental if I'm not mistaken, I doubt you want to chuck it in the bin after 400 miles.

Can you see any chords under the flap? If you can, its for the bin.

Would you really want to be pulled up by the coppers with that damage? I don't know if it is illegal or not, but I'm sure the feds would see a different view.

Looks fine to me and would still pass an MOT. I would drive with it no problem. Glue it back down so at least it looks decent.

no that look's fine, just glue it down, wouldn't fail a mot as there is no cords showing, most of that chunk is in the rim protector anyway which is a lot thicker than the rest of the sidewall

    Thanks.
Indeed it is a Continental. No threads showing at all. To me it look like its gone down the depth of the rim protector. No buldges or any oddities. I think I'll keep an eye on it for a while, I'm not doing many miles at the moment.

I had almost identical damage on one of mine due to hitting a brick on the motorway.

Ran it for over a year with no issues, and the MOT guy passed saying, as it was just the rim protector that was damaged it was fine. He actually cut off the flap.

looking fine is different from being fine. it could have damaged the structure of the tyre. had a similar one on my passat and got it replaced. it's not worth the risk.

Its just took the rim protector out so i wouldnt worry about it, thats what its there for after all

You only need to worry if it bulges or exposes the cords which has already been mentioned

I reckon you could use the vulcanising rubber solution you get in a bike puncture repair kit to stick it back down again, that stuff causes the same kind of chemical bonding that the rubber is originally held together by as far as I know!

I think the close up shot might make it look worse to us than it really is

^^ that's a good shout, so is this:
Quite often, damage to the tyre is in the inside of the tyre's contruction when you hit a pothole or a kerb, and can't always be seen from the outside. if it is only 2mm deep then i doubt that it has damaged the tyre casing or plies, just keep checking it for bulges every now and again. Aesthetically speaking, glue it down with the puncture repair solution is a good shout as it will not have any chemicals that will damge the tyre.

and don't worry; we've all done it!

This website is really good for tyre info, it has just about anything you will ever need to know on it: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

^bad idea using super glue, that will eat the rubber.... vulcanising fluid from the puncture repair kits is the best bet, if you don't have one, you can get them from most supermarket type places for about a pound.

Would I ****. I'd also stick it down. I have a similar tyre on my Alhambra, its been like that over a year with no issues.

What car is it by the way?
