Preparation has thrown up yet more questions.
For reference this is R32 with Golf MK3 VR6 box and flywheel.

    1. There is a thin steel plate that fits behind the flywheel that sits between the gearbox and the engine. We are missing this, should there be one and is it necessary?
    2. The seal that sits around the part that the flywheel bolts to has a seal. I think that is the crankshaft seal. We will need to replace this as I don’t think the chain cover will go on with it in situ. Do I really need the special tools to fit it or can it be done with a matching size pipe?
    3. The flywheel has 10 holes as does the part it bolts to. Most others appear to have 6. Should I use 10 bolts? Ok I’ve answered this one, there should be 10. However, what bolt pattern? Splined or hex?
    4. Should there be a clutch retaining spring? The kits all show pressure plate, clutch plate and release bearing?

    TIA

Question 5. Ditching the aircon will affect the length of the serpentine belt. Is there a direct replacement?

Do you mean a spring on the flywheel as per an 020 trans?

    NO.

VR6 doesn't use the spring/plate design as an 020 no.

I ditched the AC and the power steering pump on my vr6. There are belts available for all combinations. I don’t remember where I got mine though. I’ll have a look and see if I can figure out where I got mine

1, Yes it is a shim to set the correct clearance for the starter motor to the flywheel. Can also have an effect on clutch plate and pressure plate cover. Not something I would leave out unless there is evidence to suggest there is no issue.
2, The lower chain cover has a power take off oil seal. There is a tool to you put into the seal before fitment on to the cover, which will slip out when the cover is fitted to the engine.
3, VR5 and VR6 flywheels have 10 allen head bolts.
4, In a MK2 or MK3, you are likely to be using an 02A/J/S gearbox at a minimum so those parts do not exists. You are thinking about a 020 gearbox. 12v VR6 gearbox is an 02A gearbox with a CCM code most likely.

    Hope that helps.

Right, I have watched a couple of vids on replacing the rear main seal. It sits around the round wheel that the flywheel bolts to (I have no idea what that is called) and within the lower timing chain cover. One video showed the guy putting the seal into the cover and then placing the cover onto the engine and one video showed the seal being put into the cover and around the wheel while it was still attached to the car.
Which is best? Also, would it be ok to use a smear of Hylomar blue on the seal?
