I have a 97 VR6 with 87k on the clock. Purchased the car 2 months ago and had it serviced after owning it for a month. The car didn't burn any oil during this time. After having the car serviced (including oil change) I didn't check the oil level for 4 weeks. Alarmingly, I checked the level this morning and discovered it was below the minimum level on the dipstick by 3-4mm. I needed over 2 litres fill it up. I can't find any leaks under the engine and I've not seen any smoke etc. Only thing I can think of is that the garage (a highly recommended VW specialist) underfilled it during the service? The worrying thing for me is that I have no idea how long I have been driving around with the oil underfilled. Am I likely to have done any damage to the engine? If so how would I know? There are no obvious signs or sounds...
vr6's do use a bit of oil...think 1 litre a month is classed as acceptable. though mine hardly uses any actually, which is bizarre when everything else breaks on it!
Same here forgot to check it for a while and dipstick showed nil so by my reckoning the vr uses about 1/4 to 1/2 alitre per 1k. As for damage done, who knows?
Unlikely to have done any damage unless the oil light comes on - you have a fair bit of slack between the bottom of the dipstick and the oil pickup level normally.....
VRs are prone to probs when run short on the stick, Ive had to rebuild two recently and they were that bad they needed the cranks and two rods replacing + that was the cause of Phattys VR going t1ts up
Always used Synta silver on all my cars and never had a single problem with them, Synta gold just seems to run through the VRs so dont use it.
Do VW use Synta gold in their service as it has been always serviced with them? But not for much longer.
Depends on the dealers, I think they would but it depends on the numpty whos servicing the car. I once worked at one dealers where one lad kept on forgetting to put any oil in and started the engine and left it running for the forman to road test
