i cant remember how many litres of what the exact price was.
the blue temp sensor has been changed as it wasnt working properly but it didnt make much of a difference.

if i get round to sorting the exhaust leak this weekend then 'll let you know if theres any change.

    thanks guys.

turns out it was all because of a small leak between the manifold and decat which was throwing the lambda off. at one point i got 17 miles to 1/8 of a tank! this has now been rectified by welding in a flexy section. who the hell designed that ****ty 2 bolts and springs rubbish???
the mfa is now indicating 35mpg on a steady run and i got 260 miles from a tank :)

anyway thanks for all your help guys. really appreciate it. i dont want to say i told you so, but...i told you so

So your vr does 35 mpg?

    Ha!!!

What did you tell us so? You never actually worked out your true mpg...

260 miles to a tank of say 60 litres is 19.7 mpg.

Its a shame we don't have any before figures to compare it to, wait hang on a minute, didn't stu work it out at 23mpg?

Oh well, at least you got it fixed.

As a comparison, if I drive the Rado like a granny I can get around 38-39 mpg, even though the mfa stays below 35mpg.
And it is not running right, pops abit on over run, so could probably see 40 ish.

working out the real mpg was not the point. the problem was that the mfa was reading below 20mpg so it was obvious there was a problem. but thanks for helping :)

what is this obsession with mfa readings?

It uses speed, vac pressure and tps to work out mpg's. The air mass sensor doesnt come into it on those cars.

And 2 of those sensors are prone to age degrading them and diluteing the signal, hense the MFA is a pinch of salt pub talk style guide. (not to be confused with newer systems that use full ecu and fuel tank sensor access to work out more accuarte mpgs)

Oh im not saying they dont get close to the true figure, im just saying they are prone to relying on warne or faulty sensors, impairing the result

How many hours of operation before that happens?

MFA for MK3 VR6 is computed by the engine controller and sent to the instrument cluster. This signal is affected by the VSS, fuel flow - a function of injector size, load and engine speed.
If you sensors are "worn" this would have an effect on engine operation and could result in poor actual FE. This will be reflected on the MFA.
