vr6 timing chain NEED HELP!

    Hey guys, i was drivin my vr6 the other day when i started hearing a tapping sound. I didnt think much of it. Then i realised it could be the timing chain but didnt think it would get so bad straight away. I took it to the garage and they told me stupid prices, clearly trying to rip me off. Now the sound is really loud and iv stopped driving it its an Ibiza with a vr6 in it. Just wondering whether anyone knows anybody on here who could do this job for me for a lot cheaper? I really really havent got the money their asking for. Please help cheers.

    Find a VW / Seat Specialist garage in your area and ask them. Alternatively do it yourself, it's not too hard just very time consuming !

    Rough order:
    • Cooling system off
    • Manifold off
    • Rocker cover off
    • Gearbox off
    • Flywheel off
    You might also want to listen to where the noise is coming from ..... the left side or the right ? If it is the left side then it will be the Aux. Belt tensioner, if the right (by the coil pack) then most probably chains (put you ear to the maifold).

    If you do get the chains and tensioner done you might want to get the headgasket done whilst the engine is partially stripped down too (if it needs it), not really much more effort required.

    depends what there asking for doing it?

    I did the tining chains (2 of them, and the 2 guides and hydraulic tentioner and the tentioner that contacts the top chain) on my mk2 VR6, the genuine parts alone are around the 200 mark from VR, and to do the job you either have to take off the gearbox, or take the engine out as to get to the chain covers the gearbox has to be removed.

    Its actually a really easy job to do, with the right tools, the biggest pain is removing the box or the engine, where abouts are you based?

    the alternative is to try and replace just the hydraulic tentioner *(24mm nut on the back of the RHS of the head, well it actually screws into the timing chain cover) this might re-tention it....

    but the problem with that is the tention usually goes because the chains wear through the plactic coated tentioner and bits of the plastic break off and then the chains rub on the metal part, and that where the noise comes from...

    the newer tentioner (the part that contacts with the chain) now come entirely made of plastic so they dont wear or make the same noises as the metal ones

    Another good thing to check would be to take off the sump and see what the oil pump has trapped in the mesh. It would show you any plastic that has broken off of the chain guides and indicate that something needs replacing ! It's an easy thing to do too ! Have a look .....
