I agree. I found my best combo was VR gears (02A CCM) for 1st and 2nd with G60 gears (02A CBA). 2nd would hit 70mph, 3rd 97mph and 4th 130mph, never used fifth. That was with about 370bhp and 360lbft torque. Traction becomes a major issue with shorter gears. That gearing may seem long but there's more than enough torque to still fly through the gears.
VR final drive (FDR) is not that bad on a VR6 with a good map on it. I would only imagine the longer FDR of the VR gearbox fitted to a car with more that 350lbft will accelerate pretty hard, while limiting wheelslip and increasing speed in gears. 3.125 FDR on the other hand never understood why people fit them. Good on a diesel though.
