Just been shown an MOT advisory sheet for my mates Golf ( 1.6 BLP engine 2005 )
One of the advisorys stated : The engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay

Has anyone come accross this before?

Its totally bog standard with the OE covers in place on the engine.

Is it me or is the MOT tester being a numpty?

standard advise,to cover the fact that newer cars have loads of covers/undertrays fitted and prevents us testers inspecting some components,;)

I just had this on my works ford focus along with:

Drivers view obscured by objects near drivers mirror

I had an air freshener hanging off the mirror - :p

    Cheers

It's mainly to protect the tester as they are the one who take the brunt of it if it goes wrong. People have this misconception that an mot means their car will be faultless for a year when the reality is its just a very basic roadworthyness test

Yeah, look at a E60 5 series BMW or Mercedes A class for example, plastic covers covering pretty much the complete floor/engine, everything.

Has this too with my MK5 Golf. The MOT tester actually apologied for having to put it on the form :-/
A bit anoying really, as this is the first advisory I'd ever had and it's a stupid one. It's not like that's my fault!

If you take your car to the VW dealers for the MOT, will they now be issuing advisories on all their new cars?! Duh!

It's only an advisory, it's not making your car a write-off lol

look at it from our point of view. If an engine bay is covered in plastic and there's a fuel leak you can't see, it's passed without mention and on the way home the car catches fire, we'd be asked why nothing was picked up on its mot. It seem pointless from the outside but it's all we have as testers to cover our ****

    Exactly that.

Some engine undertrays you can't see the steering rack so can't check the gaiters/pipes etc properly.

As I say, look under a E60 BMW or Merc A class and you can't see bugger all!

No dismantling allowed on MOT either so can't start removing the covers/undertray to allow a full inspection.

Same here, it is a daft but given it you struggle to see on a modern undertrayed vehicle - (2000- !!) inner CV Boots, and stuff like Fuel lines/servo hoses

Daft but a backside covering exercise !

You can smell. Even the smallest fuel leak ffs
Anyway the MOT has never worth the bit of paper it's written on
It even said it's Not proof of a car being roadworthy

You can't fail something because of a smell! lol if you can't see it you can't fail it. Pass and advise simple as that

See if that was me I'd fail it
    But I see your point
My mk2 past more than one mot with next to no will because it was covered by the plastic cover
I wish it had failed as it would have been scraped year before I got it

When you go on the refresher courses for the MOTs they tell you to leave your 'service' and 'common sense' head at the door. lol

With a lot of stuff on an MOT the standards are way below what you'd expect.

Like tyres, a tyre that looks fooked with bald outer shoulders can be passable if it has 1.6mm across the centre 3/4 of the width.

Yup, I'll always remember 2 things I was told on my course.

    1. "You need two "heads" if you are going to be an MOT tester. A service head and a MOT Head"
    and the fall back
    2. "If in doubt, Pass & Advise"

Brake pads are a good one, technically 1.5mm (Or the thickness of a 5p coin) of brake material will pass the mot, though for service standards they're fooked. Also an inop reg plate lamp is a fail, Yet tyres with shoulders bald as Phil Mitchell are a Pass (& advise) [:s]

Same as Lotus Elises with the full undertray covering rotten brake lines
