Looking for something new to do I've decided on welding. My old man can show me a few basics of arc welding, but does anyone know any good D.I.Ybooks?

I just got a mig welder and played around with it.

Once you get the wire feed speed right for the power setting, it is easy as pie.

The Haynes manual will certainly point you in the right direction.

Welding is easy; just not so easy to do it correctly.

There's not much welding you can do on old cars with an arc welder, unless you're really good. The metal tends to be too thin.

Mig welding is easier anyway, so start with that, unless you want to do heavy duty fabrication.

Like the Beees tard who taught me said.
Lots of people can weld, not many can do it well.

Get yerself a mig welder, have some fun playing with it.
We'll explain how to set it up and what to look for in a good weld.
Post pics up and we'll tell you how to improve.

Old saying but the only way you'll learn is practice.
(Took me 2 weeks, but a shed load of practice ;) )

    Try...

    Really good welding site.

    My best tips are:

    1. You can only weld strong shiney metal so make sure all paint/primer/underseal are removed from the weld site.

    2. Practice with heavy guage steel before trying repairs on bodywork.

    3. If you are going to be doing a bit of welding invest in a good reactive welding mask... makes starting a heck of a lot easier!

im a welder been doing it for 5 years now. i work for (JCB) making diggers. im a mig welder and its easy realy. the hard thing about it is geting your power settings right and wire feed. also you need a steady hand. but if you do start welding be prepared to look like a heroin addict as you get lots of burns on ya arms :p

I'm no welder, as Mikehorsb may testify to having seen my mk1 , but my one tip is - Do your boots up well and make sure your srtides go over the tops... a lump of red hot metal dropping in will really give you the hump.

I wear gauntlets and overalls too, to stop me getting sunburn.

Also, make sure your overalls are clean, because if they are heavily soaked with oil then they can catch fire. This has happened.

You know John Connell, one of the bosses?
If so ask him what he thought of Gary Ross. (Old boss)
He should remember who that was.
I'm interested in how many 4 letter words are in there though.
