What brake disks / pads do you recommend for track use?

    Hi,

    I`ve got a MK2 GTi, 2.0 16V, it has the G60 conversion at the front, currently with drilled disks and unknown pads.

    The rears appear to be standard (?) with solid disks and unknown pads.

    The rears are badly corroded (I think the calipers are seized), and the fronts are worn too much to save.

    I am looking at getting a new set of disks and pads. The car is stripped and will be used as a track car, but driven there and back, so I dont want pure track pads as from cold, they`ll be no good on the road.

    So far, I`ve read several posts, and assuming the calipers can be freed up i think I need:

    Caliper rewind tool 98741 15 (GFS)

    Rear Disks 62422 15.60 BQ (Brembo) (GFS) or Zimmerman, Febi or `Genuine` from AVS

    Rear Pads, now I`m not sure here, will I be better with standard pads, ie :
    Febi or `Genuine` from AVS,
    OR 64601A BRAKE PAD SET-REAR PAGID G2 8/83 >10/91 14.50 from GSF

    OR

    TTMDB1382X BRAKE PAD SET-RE MINTEX XTREME G2 8/83 >10/91 29.79
    64601FG BRAKE PAD SET-RE EBC GREE G2 8/83 >10/91 26.50
    I dont want to put pads on the rear that wont get enough heat into them to work properly, I dont know how much work the rear brakes do on a car like this

    I`ll get new caliper bolts at the same time, from reading on here, they seem to be a pig to remove and its best to replace them. I can`t find the part numbers, but i`ll just ask.

    For the fronts,

    should I fit something like these:
    62359B BRAKE DISC-VENTED G2 G60/RALLYE 23.50
    or just go for something better like

    some grooved disks, EBC or Tarox?

    I do NOT wanted drilled obviously, I`ll be giving the brakes abuse and dont want cracking which I know that drilled disks are prone to.

    I will then be getting something like
    TTMDB1571X BRAKE PAD SET-MINTEX XTREME G2 G60 4/90 >7/91 38.30
    Ferodo 2500`s, or 64520 BRAKE PAD SET-PAGID TQ G2 16V 12/88 >10/91 21.50.

    I know there are loads of other types of pads around, initally, I dont want to spend loads on really expensive disks / pads. I dont mind paying that bit more on the front, but i`d rather get some, then if they are no good, I can upgrade later. I know I wont get years out of them anyway...

    I`ll be replacing the Wheel bearings at the same time, they are so cheap, it seems silly to try and remove the old one from the disks and refit them...

    Ohyeah, need to replace the fluid too. All hoses are braided, so thats about it covered isnt it?

    Thats all, unless I`ve missed something obvious. Thoughts?

    Nige, on the front I use the Brembo plain 280mm discs from GSF - 60
    I use Pagid RS19s on the front but they are 150... Ferodo DS2500 are cheaper at about 80 and should be fine for the 'ring.

    Rears I use Pagid fast road pads from GSF and plain discs.

    You'll find that after a short time even with new rear discs they can corode around the edges.

    Fluid, I use is Motul RBF 600 , it's under 10 a bottle ( you'll need two to change the fluid)

    The 280s have normal M8 caliper bolts, it's the 8v 239mm brakes that have the troublesome allen headed bolts

    41222K WHEEL BEARING KIT-FRONT G2 8/87 >7/92 11.77 x2 (GSF) (maybe?)

    Rear:
    62422 BRAKE DISC-REAR(4 STUD)BQ G2 8/83 >10/91 15.60 x2 (GSF)
    64601A BRAKE PAD SET-REAR PAGID G2 8/83 >10/91 14.50 (GSF)
    41311K WHEEL BEARING KIT-REAR G2 8/83 >7/92 5.53 x2 (GSF)
    98741 CALIPER REWIND TOOL GENERAL USE*** 15.00 (GSF)
    Caliper bolt for rear, dont know part number, will ask when I phone up.

    That look about all i`d need?

    New fluid obviously...

    Are the bearings on the front noisy?, as you'll need the new ones pressing in with a hydraulic press.

    Rears 'just' knock in with a hammer and punch, so they're straight forward

    Do cambelt and tensioner, take it as unknown if you dont have any record of having it done

    Yeah, like Gary says, I wouldn't bother getting into changing the front bearings unless you think they're knackered. The rears as you say, might as well do them as taking the old ones out of the current discs is a pain and they are cheap and easy(ish) to fit :)

    The brakes I`m confident doing, I am still not sure about the belt & tensioner (despite Steph trying to convince me its easy). I suppose its because there is more to go wrong in if I get the belt wrong !!

    I`m going to leave the front bearings. I dont want to spend money if I dont need to, this is supposed to be done on a tight budget !!
