Hi Chris, the Porsche 924 used a VW made block 2.0 engine which was also used in the VW LT van and had a 84.4 stroke and 86.5 bore

Ah yes, but does it look like the Reynard blocks in this thread? That's what I was thinking.

I'm looking at the breather on the engine on the left - VW 5cyl and small block breather.

I bow to HPR for spotting this. CSI CGTI (VWMS dept) of the highest order

    - full text in the Le Mans thread posted earlier here.

From the text, apart from the Group B typo which should be Group A, we can safely say these A59 engines will not turn up in the scrappy, and the engine is in very short secondhand supply if at all!

Sorry to ruin the thread a little, but what do you guys reckon that silver one would fetch if opened up to a worldwide market? Tens of thousands + I guess?? Only ever seen one in a magazine years ago, and that was a replica!!

The one in the magazine was blue? It was a genuine arch kit which found its way to the USA - and no more mechanically.

The engine in this silver car is unique. It's not a VW engine basically. Gearbox would appear to be VW origins, despite the gubbins on it. The transmission I'm guessing is not Syncro and is probably early-stage Haldex at a wild guess.

Any price is theoretical, and the VW market isn't paying ridiculous amounts for any car. This car never turned a wheel in anger.

i`ve been told at Techno Classica that vw/vwm know very little themselves about this car.... one of the things they found out is that the Turbo is based on a Ford Cosworth item

Schmidt Motorsprt built it, so that makes sense, ie it wasn't in house.

All good things come to those who wait [8D]

Apologies to the OP for making him wait over 5 years!

Flicking through this magazine, something stood out a mile:

And here you have it. The best information on this engine we've ever seen.

    Summary:
    • Known as the HPT16 VW Golf / Audi engine. Hello Google.
    • "Based on castings from a shelved VW rally engine programme... cancelled in 1993." Yep!
    • "Wider bore than the standard (EA827) production engine. That in turn allows the use of 86mm bore and stroke dimensions."
    • Cylinder block is aluminium.
    • Pistons, rods and crank are parts originally developed for the rally programme, and have direct lineage to the 1989 IMSA engine (700-800bhp).
    • Used in Audi A4s in the South African Touring car series :o
    • Won at Le Mans, LM P2 class, three years on the run [:*:]
