I am currently with Virgin, having ditched BT - was paying 25 a month just for broadband, the router (was the new BT home hub thing they made a big fuss about) constantly re-set itself if a 2nd/3rd computer connected to it and we never saw more than 4mb.

Virgin messed our order up about 4 times and kept promising us more stuff each time, so we ended up not paying for our router and getting the top dog 'N' router, also aloud to keep the other 3(!!!) they sent us so they will be going on fleabay for 10 each :) And they also sent us some netgear rangemax N things that plug in via USB and boost the wi-fi signal or something.

Tested this morning and getting around 17mb

I'm getting 10.3mb through Virgin which isn't bad considering I'm paying for 10mb.
Apparantly you're lucky to get half the "up to" speeds through a BT line.

My neighbour had a Homehub, the wireless is shocking - he couldn''t even get reception in his attic. And I couldn't connect to it at all, whereas I used to be able to use his connection with no problems. Told him to get a Netgear the same as mine, now he has reception in his "porn den" attic, AND i can use his for downloads - bonus!

I have been with BT for years and had very little problem with them. Like most of these companies they are next to useless when you speak to them. Especially when you get put through to India and speak to "Geoffrey" or "Marjory"!

I get on average a 4mb connection. I now pay 19.56 a month as they keep reducing the price if I agree another 12 months contract. I have the unlimited Option 3 package. I agree about the BT HomeHub, everyone one of them is crap. Luckily I knew this from friends experiences of them and didn't take one. I also have my own NETGEAR router which always works and everything connects to it.

I have looked into other ISPs and you always get good and bad stories about them all. The fear of the unknown keeps me with BT as it works 99.9% of the time and I am happy with the speed for what I do.

I'm supposedly on a 8mb line but seem to get a reliable 7mb connection. Thats through Orange and its free with my mobile phone.

Connections been 110% reliable in last 5 years or so.

1.2 sodding meg. Must be a 'peak' time, BT like to turn down the wick when people actually want to use it. ****ers.

It also said my server is in Birmingham? I'm in Cardiff?

I get 4meg ish when everyone is in work, which is handy because I work from home, but the iplayer runs at such a low quality setting in the evenings it's hardly worth watching. My mate the BT engineer says I'll never get good service via the phone line because our junction box pre dates Christianity.

I should go cable, but I move so often I can't be bothered with the **** ache.

How old is your modem, if you've been with them for years then you'll want a new modem off them because the old one can't get any higher than that kind of speed.
