I'm going to make my own sub box to fit into a cubby hole in the Mk2 golf boot. What material should I use? Is it worth it? or is it cheaper to buy one designed to fit discreetly into the side of the boot?

if you want to make one to fit in to the side of your boot you will need to use GRP and then a fron plate which would be MDF.

    it isnt easy though,

    12mm MDF is easiest.

i personally think you would find it hard to make a sub box out of 12mm MDF to fit in a cubby hole!

Depends how big the 'cubby hole' is! 12mm MDF is pretty easy to work with.

Ply wood is crap for making subs.. the different grains all resonate at different frequencies which can and do cause phase cancellation....

If making GRP boxes then try to keep the amount of glass to a minimum, cos the more you have to make out of it the harder it'll be, try and keep as many MDF panels as possible. I took on the job of making a piar of boxes for a Mitsubishi Colt and regretted it badly as there's only 2 MDF panels in it, the face and the floor, nightmare of a job. MDF is easier and cheaper to work with than fibreglass too, just that glass is much more versatile.

Trim it all off with a 5mm layer of foam and some leatherette and it'll look sweet.
