Broken rings and maybe broken ring landings as well [8(]
Either way pistons need to come out to see the extent of damage :(

Golfs are bad ....Take up fishing with me

Heres a suggestion. Buy my 2ltr bottom end with balanced crank and new 83mm mahle pistons. Done about 2k since rebuild. You will need a set of abf rods though.

Infact, if you have a stroker crank, my pistons might fit anyway! Although you will need a rebore to suite, which you might need to have done anyway. Pistons are 83mm 9a. Might be another option for you Micky.

    Will comment later.
Not sure if patching the engine up is the answer or cost effective to what I saw in the pictures.

Sell your projects and get a mint engine built up.

    Obviously an 8v ;)

DET. All along the top edge of the piston. Really obvious in the first photo. :thumbd:

Bits of piston has then fallen down the side and scratched the bore. You need new pistons and depending on damage, a new block if the grooves are too deep to hone.

    That's what I thought [8(] I can see and feel where it's cooked it a bit [8(]

There's no groves or scratches in the bore so think it will be fine with a hone will get my mechanic to check it on Friday when he's next in .

But if it needs much doing do I go ABF or put the AEB turbo in ???

    As Nige says above really

    Mike,
The engine set up will need checking when the base engine is built back up.
Quite frankly this engine needs a rebore with new pistons rings etc.
Or if not subject to rules another engine size up like a 9A or ABF base engine.

Do check that set up, as the engine had some form of destructive knock, hence pitting on the pistons and why you started to smoke on the track day.

I could be wrong, the cams look like regular "control cams" as they are called for the race series.
Usually an engine like that circa 150-155bhp@6600rpm and 140+lbft@5400rpm. 180bhp?? do not waste your money on that KR marlacky. Just fit a std ABF!

Looks and sounds like you may aswell start afresh Micky :(

ABF is a good solid engine that can stand up to alot of abuse in standard form. Way to go if your keeping it NA.
Plus you could be looking around the 170bhp mark standard and tuned.

I'd look at the cam specs. As the pistons appear to have been pocketed, there's been a hot cam in there at some point. It may be this one, it may have been removed.

Other than that, get an ABF, drop it in and have fun.

Quite a rare engine. I should imagine parts are even rarer?
