Ok, after about 7 years of mk2 8v gtis I have finally got a 16v version. I first drove a 16v golf in 1989 when a customer bought one new, took it straight to Gti engineering and had loads of mods (I can not remember what). I remember driving it in 1989 and thinking "this is a bit special" and deciding I had to have one, it took a while (18 years) but I drove mine back from the mot station this week, and i still think thats a pretty good engine. So my thoughts are whats the story with the 16v vw engine. most of the great engines through history have a story,-rolls' merlin, bristol 6cly, fords dfv, ford cosworth, vauxhalls red top 16v, saabs turbos, even the humble rover v8 to name but a few, So are there any stories as to the design, testing of the 16v vw engine or was it just german engineers doing what they do best. anythoughts Pete.
