    Hi folks
I'm looking to get an alarm fitted in the new year but haven't really got a clue as what to go for.. I'm driving a mk2 driver and looking to spend under 300 fitted, (Leicestershire area if anyone knows a good fitter) but want a good quality one.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

The best alarm is the one that stops your car getting stolen.

Sounds obvious I know - but it's as much (probably more) about the guy who fits it rather than the unit he fits. Anything that's Thatcham cat 1 approved will have met a perfectly good standard - bolt ons like total close etc are all just niceties. But even the best Thatcham Cat 1 alarm in the world will be no use protecting the car if the fitter has done the job in half an hour and left everything easy to defeat.

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful! Mr Toad, do you know of any good fitters in the Leicestershire area and would it be foolish to buy a 2nd hand toad ai606? There seems to be quite a few going on ebay...
    Thanks

Why not fit a cheap one seeing as its only a basic model. i am not trying to sound harsh but is your car worth spending 3 hundred quid on. a decent wheel lock would provide enough of a deterent.
I used to pull the fuel pump fuse out of my early cars / cheaper cars , works well ,i had a mk2 gti broke into and they didnt get away simply because the thieving scallies dont think to look,

Its working fine Mr toad, It was fitted in 2001 aswell.

Is it possible to get a replacement key fob coded in, even though i dont know the pin code?
And, Is there anyway I can switch off the autolock feature? If you know that is.
    Cheers.

Without the pin code you cannot do much im afraid

have a look at the back of the unit under the bonnet and see if the serial number is still there if so PM me the number and i shall see what comes up

I used a guy who trades through Ebay recently and am really happy with the installation (as are my insurance company!).
Got the Toad Ai606 for 220 installed (including ripping out crappy old alarm). The guy is based in Birmingham and came to my office in Oxford (also covered by the 220).

    Search on ebay for specialized_security
