Hi Well ive been reading up and have noticed alot of people mention to only use a genuine oil filter, ive done a search which never turned up much could anyone shed any light on this ? im building my new engine for my golf and have just put a euro car parts Bosch one on? should i bother changing it for a genuine one? thanks Manoj
It's a fairly critical thing and they are often cheaper from VW than anywhere else. Bosch or Mann are ok but I would try and use the proper ones
no, i wont be using a bosch one again. the body of its really thin and it doesnt have the flat sides so you cant put the filter tool on there. basically it felt poor quality so would you let that thing filter your oil? VW, MANN or KENGST
cheapie ones don't have a non-return valve fitted i believe, which causes your top end to be temporarily starved of oil on startup each time?
yeah as above, the oem type filters have a non-return valve in to keep the hydro lifters happy, pattern ones do not. also iirc they have a bypass valve in as well, so if the filter gets blocked oil can still get to the head. MANN filters are OEM quality, and I beleive GSF sell genuine VW filters too as their 'BQ' option
VW filter - car was designed to use this - and its just as cheap, if not cheaper than buying an alternative branded filter! Get a reciept and throw the VW invoice in your history folder
oh ok, its just cos i already bought the bosch one and wanted to know how important it was, ill get a VW just for peace of mind thanks everyone
well its supposed to catch rubbish in the oil. if its letting things circulate round and round the engine, depending on what the rubbish is, it could cause excess wear.
Just out of interest, I thought that some VW filters don't have non-return valves depending on which model it is for? Ian...
