Ka. Rolled it. It was my first car, so it was the greatest car ever. They're actually nice handling cars - I knew all the lanes around my way and kept up with a lot of faster machines in the bends. Used to cook its brakes like crazy (new tyres, brakes and an oil change every 5k), so I fitted new calipers and vented disks. The week after that I said "Watch this!" and promptly fishtailed off down the road and rolled it twice. Giant pushbike. I'd rolled my car, no means of transport! Volvo 340. 100. Was kept secret from my mum for a month until she turned up at my mates house and clocked it outside. Only car I ever sold for a profit. Used to surprise people how quickly it'd get off the line (RWD with the gearbox under the boot). Surprised me how carbs drink fuel when you nail it everywhere - it was doing about 10mpg. It also demolished a mate's garden wall with only a scuff to the Volvo Bumper of Power! I was drifting it around roundabouts before it was trendy and everything. 1043cc Polo. My mum's car, borrowed when I'd killed one car or another. Probably the Mondeo. It gained about 15 of its 43 horsepower back after being redlined everywhere by me. It scared me half to death as the tracking was about 4 yards out, and I discovered that this meant the car was unstoppable in the wet. As in, it wouldn't stop. I was amazed that I could keep up with power rangers in the twisties even in this underpowered, understeering heap o' ****e. MK1 Mondeo 1.8. Hateful. Fact: You can belt the **** out of anything you can reach from the driver's seat, and it won't break. Get busy with a bird in the passenger seat, and everything falls to pieces. You can tell they were designed for reps Went to the scrappy after it drank it's oil on a long trip and the oil warning lamp was dead... MK2 Valver. Was a bit of a mess. Got broken into and ruined. Did 28mpg if I absolutely nursed it, and didn't go like it should've. Suspect the timing was way out now... MK2 GTI. Bodily a big mess, but the previous owner serviced it instead of meddling with it. 140 with 90 worth of tax left on it! Currently being fettled a bit. 406 HDi. Another hateful rep special. Only any good for going up and down the motorway in relative silence. Made by people who really would be better employed making wine and cheese, where individuality and variation in the product are positives rather than negatives... Other stuff I've borrowed for a long while or a memorable while: Jag XJ40 4.0. Absolutely hilarious. Had any car insurance when I had the Mondeo. Me, 19 years old, a couple of hundred horses and a limited slip diff? Fantastic fun. Citroen ZX 1.9D. Another car with a naff engine but a nice chassis. Nothing worked but you had great fun driving it. MK3 Golf 1.6. Very well screwed together, probably one of the best second hand cars I've ever picked up. But it does have full VWSH. Jax X308 4.0. 290 brake this time. Lovely in a straight line, disappointed by the lack of an LSD.
I have driven a few of these, unfortunately. Only two redeeming features, one of which you mention, safe in a crash. Comfy seats too. A family friend runs a Volvo Specialist garage and we had my wife's Nova we had at the time in for repair. He gave us a 1.4lt 340 to get home in. 15mpg!!! It ran ok as well. We took it back the next day and got a lift home. It was cheaper! A few months later we had the same scenario but 1.7lt 340. Same thing!!! Around the same time as this I worked with a woman who had a 2.0lt 360GLE. She was a self confessed terrible driver so the car was safe for her but secretly a disaster waiting to happen for everyone else. She used to pop into the centre of Glasgow once a week for work but was so poor at driving she couldn't reverse park so someone used to go with her to park it!!! LOL!!! I got the job one day of going with her but that day she was going to a meeting and I was to drive it back to the office and go back and get her. The thing was basically a cart with a rocket attached! One of THE most terrifying things I have driven! Under sprung, damped, braked and weighing 10 tons but with 118BHP. It was like a boat to drive. Plant your foot down on the accelerator and the back end went down, the front rose up and off it shot. You tried to brake for the corners but an anchor would have been more effective. On the corners it wanted to go everywhere but the direction you wanted to go in. How she hadn't killed herself or someone else I don't know. Truly terrifying! Nice seats.
