Ok so with summer upon us I decided to replace my broken heater matrix.

    Its a 1988 1.8 Gti , pb engine code

5 hrs later and its done and the dash is back in , turn the key and Golfy just turns over :o.

No spark thinks I , and following some investigation, decides its the coil gone faulty.

Replace the coil and still no change [:^(].

Now I gets the Haynes and Bentley manuals out and go through the ignition system

    Switch  OK

    Control module  OK

Now I'm stuck [:s] Is there anyway to check the distributor ( bear in mind I'm on my own here) .

Starting to get really frustrated [:x]

    Cheers

It's gone to the technical sections

Start by checking your gearbox earth, if you haven't already.

Maybe a wire has come loose in the area where you were working? Check around there - might be the reason?

check the dizzy by taking the plug off the hall sender on the dizzy. with the ignition on you should have a permenant live at the middle pin, and when turning on the key the middle live drops out and you get a pulse at the pin on the left. if that checks out OK look for continuity in the three wires that go from the hallsender plug to the control module(think its a TCI-h? unit?) HTH

my distibutor had gone the chip inside (hall sender it think its called) engine would turn but not start ,no spark try replacing it with one from the scrappy but if you take it out make sure you mark exatly where it lines up to on the block as that will throw your ig timing out and it defo wont start then makr where the plug sits and also where the rotor arm is pointing hope this helps ,

Proof that sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees....

So got some mates who are ex-meccies round to have a prod and fiddle

Within 30 mins discovered that although the dizzy cap looked OK the center pin in the tower wasn't making a good connection so NO SPARK!

Quick trip to the local motor emporium and hey presto ITS ALIVE .... again

Now just need it to pass the MOT :~
