Where is the thermostat? Mk1 GTI

Right,

I've got a leaking hose on my mk1 1600 GTI which runs from the water pump to a housing which has the temperature sender sticking out and then attaches to the block and the radiator top hose. When I look on the websites to order one they all feature a combined temp sender and thermostat housing. The housing I'm looking at doesn't have a conventional circular thermostat in it. Am I being dim? TBH I just want the hose!
