Ive just bought a 02 MK4 20v Turbo. Its a great car, and well quick.

Ive been thinking about changing the air filter on it over the weekend. Was thinking of putting a K&N pannel filter to replace the old one, but i want that induction roar which you get from a cone filter.

Can anyone recommend which filter i should use.
Has anyone else on here changed to a cone filter on there 1.8T, And, Is it easy to remove the airbox and replace it with the cone filter?

Any advise would be great guys

    Cheers!!!

Did have at one point, great noise but make sure it has good filtration as mine made the MAF dirty :(

Don't get one like in your picture, that just draws hot air in to the engine.

The most efficient intake is the standard air box, smooth the ridges out the inside, and run a cold air feed from the front grill. Cheaper and better than any cone filter.

    ditto.
look on vortex for the DIY and the flow comparison between all the major brands.
i ran one for a while in a modded DIY cylinder heat sheild......
it was actually a 6 pint stella can with the top cut of and a mount fabricated for the MAF.

    STELLA POWER.
sounded awesome, did absolutely nothing for performance.
now smooth air box stock paper filter and cold air feed

Cheers for the above advise everyone. Not quite sure what route to go down now though. [8-}]

I just come across this site while doing some searches on Google.

    http://www.swgmotorsport.com/asps/ShowDetails.asp?id=152

This induction kit replaces the original air box, and is relocated behind the lower front bumper , to ensure that the maximum amount of cold air is drawn into the engine.
Clever idea really. Atleast its not directly opposite the engine drawing in the heat like the above picture i posted.

But i bet its a pain to fit!

    What do think guys?

looks good but be wary as you dont wana be drowning that via a puddle...

id honestly use the std box with a panel filter an cold feed...

Cheers for pointing that out  I didn't think about that [:s]

Looks like i am better off with a K&N Panel and a cold air feed.

Will it sound more throaty than my original standard air filter.

    green panel filter - 36
add a larger intake flexi to it for cold air feed and you will flow enough for stock turbo's

expect to see a 3-5g/s gain in airflow over stock paper filter (from logs I have done)

ive used a lot of different filters on the 1.8T. currently im running a carbonio cold air intake, much like the swg one but the intake is carbon, hence the 200 + price tag. You will notice next to no hp gains with a CAI on a turbocharged engine though, its purely for the big sneeze noise.
To be honest, the best set up ive had is with a pipercross panel filter, smoothed airbox and ducting to the front grill.
I would'nt worry about sucking water up unless you frequently drive through rivers though.
Stay well clear of cone filters, useless.

    quite the opposite..
on an ibiza cupra i fitted a k03s to I mapped it to stage 2 CC with its airbox on there and stock paper filter, swapped to an open large green cone filter and gained over 20g/s airflow... I **** you not. 170g/s to 192g/s gain. logged with vagcom

Bill, have you ever compared a panel filter to a standard paper filter?
