Damn that seems a lot of work to make up a lead.

    & tools required...

just get a set from here, sorted:
    http://www.vwspares.co.uk

the old leads are designed for the old mk1 style dizzy cap/coil, the halfords ones are for newer cap/coil. they're actually MK2 Golf ones thats why they wont fit youer cap properly. the lead end as above you just remove the nipples by unthreading them

They fit the cap ok iirc?

Forgot to put a pic of the cap:

ya thats early stylee cap, so the halfords leads wont fit it. avs only list 1 type of lead set for the mk1, which will fit that cap :)

check your coil tho, make sure the connector on it looks the same as that cap

Sorry Mike, I'd forgotten how complex the Beru method is, compared with just screwing the cable in on NGK types![:$]

    I don't know Magnacore, so can't comment.

John's mention of the different dizzy cap fittings on, pre 1984 - DX versus post 1984 - EV motors is, as usual, spot on. I know that you did mention DX early on, but I overlooked the different type of connector at the dizzy end![8(]

I must say that John's point to VWSpares does get you the Beru ZEF type which I am pretty sure are Silicone-Copper?

you dont get the leads from vw but you can get all the conectors the wire is all so listed

the ones for the cap/coil are 036035281
and the spark plug end is 032035255
not sure if the price is for 4 or each i am sure john would know
you all so get a adaptor bit so you can use ordinary leads that is 111905427 in the coil and cap
but as john has said you could go to the mk2 cap

    Actually Mush.

One wonders if there would be a better electrical connection by converting EV Ignition to DX type?[:s]

Bigger contact areas on the terminals!

 yes mate, that's the set i ordered.

Mushy regarding VAG items when i was up there they said only some of the 5 leads were still being stocked for the mk1 DX though on the mk1 the dizzy cap is at the front of the engine as apposed to the side of the block so very close to the spark plugs, only the coil one is the longer troublesome one so you could probably get away with a later model if you had them layed out in front of you and matched up the length and connections.

    Just out of interest:

VWMS Used the following on the Gruppe A 16V cars:

    Coil - 0 221 122 399 (Bosch)

    Ignition Cable Set - N 100 526 14

All of the other bits are SP or VWM numbers.

So, in real terms, they used some very basic kit on the 193bhp rally cars!

they do look similar to the halfords kit becasue the only difference is the dizzy/coil ends. the difference is the later leads use liek a pin inside the holes on the cap, which the spring clip you pictured on your lead clips onto. thew later leads have kinda wings, which spread out to touch the outside of the cap holes. its hard to explain

you can just see these wings poking out of the ends of the leads in the AVS picture. i prefer the later type as the leads clip in nicely, but it doesnt actually make any difference just as long as you have a complete matching set. mixing and matching isnt good

HT leads arrived today, big thanks for all your help.

Much better quality and like said much better connections, even had VW numbers on them.

Only small niggle is that the coil lead could be a little bit longer.

    cheers
