Just wondered which speakers to put in the back of my '91 16V? It will have 13cm components in the front, and depending on what I sell my CL, I could put Pioneer 20cm 2099's in the back or I have a new JL 10W04 10" sub that I was going to sell. With new speakers I was possibly thinking of some new Pioneer 20cm or 25cm speakers, some Kenwood 7x10 or a 10" or 12" sub. If I go with a sub, being that I still want boot space, I might put it in the side of the wheel arch to give me max space left! I'm not looking for massive volume etc, just a nice bit of punchy bass with a good clear sound. So what do you reckon to go for? Cheers! Edited by: Aquablue
If a 10" sub would be best here's some (apart form my new JL one) 10" one's that are meant to be good: Infinity perfect, Alpine type R SWR-1022/42D, Pheonix gold, Octane ZR, Kenwood KFC-W1005DB or KFC-WPS1002D, Pioneer 256C, or 2504 or Vibe black air. Any recommendations?!
One thing you may want to consider is the difficulty of building a round(ish) enclosure that would fit in the spare wheel well. It would be much easier to build a cuboid enclosure that is shallow and wide / high, and lace this lengthways down one side of the boot. Put a grill on the sub and you'd only lose about 10" off the width of your boot. As for recommendations, what is your budget? RE (resonant engineering) SE10's are very good for around 190, or JL 10W3 for similar money. If your budget is less then things get a bit more tricky, but infinity do some good subs in the low 100's. Also bear in mind you need good power for a sub else it's likely that you'll cook its voice coils with distortion from the amp (it's quite difficult to hear when you're in the car and on the move). So budget 150 or more for at least the rated RMS power of the sub (600WRMS for the RE). Then factor in 30-40 for cables, plus about 20 for materials to make your enclosure (if you're building it yourself).
Forgot to say, 6x9's / 7x10's / 10" speakers in the parcel shelf run low passed from an amp are a good way of getting midbass, but don't expect any heavy low end. they doa bit, but it really is mainly the midbass they do best. 6x9's should do the job, get some JBL's or similar and give them decent power from an amp. I wouldn't recommend using bass boost instead as it will sound a bit boomy and muddy the sound. A sealed 8" sub would also be an option if you really aren't bass hungry, again run from a modest amp (a 2 channel amp bridged would do nicely if the sub only requires 200WRMS or so).
