Besides tempcover and dayinsure? I need two weeks' cover and neither of those underwriters will cover me for some reason. I expect it's to do with the car.

I used AA once although I have no idea who they are underwritten by. Just watch the excess though, was looking at day insurance to test drive a car I wanted to buy - the excess was an eyewatering 1000!
AA is also one of the big two, I think Tempcover. Minimum excess is 500. This is kind of ridiculous what do you do if you want to test drive a high ins group car, do they really expect you to take out a full policy and then cancel it if you decide not to buy?
Are you already insured on another car? If so, try your current insurer and ask to add a car for two weeks - most of the big insurers will do this.
if the car is modified a lot of short-term insurers won't like it. That seems to be a major issue with this short-term insurance system.
