    railway sleepers FTW

Runner up would be a couple of layers of 18mm marine-ply on a 2x3" (or CLS) frame. Legs at 500-1000mm centres or so with ply on the back and sides for rigidity (doesn't need to be 18mm unless you're going for a part-time bomb shelter as well :) Bolt it securely to the floor if you can, failing that ballast it with paving-slabs - you'll want it to stay put when you're swinging off strut-cap nuts in the vice.

have to agree with the suggestion on the kitchen worktop. The good thing with this is you can easy cut it to fit the space available. I would suggest you try and bolt it to the wall so it dose not move. But good luck.

mines got eight 6"x2" legs- corner 4 are bolted to the walls and floor + 4 evenly spaced legs toward the middle that also bolt to the floor

then 6"x2" horizontal beams running front to back and accross to span the whole garage.

topped off with an 8foot x 4 foot board of 3/4 inch marine ply ripped in half and doubled up

mines a bit high because i needed to fit a fridge and a small freezer under it, ideally it would be 6" to 8" lower but its taken loads of abuse without complaint

I made my own, 4m long, but the design is modular.

First off start with lots of L-Shape section, mine was 50mm.

    Make the following shape twice:

    Then lift the top (bottom):

Add a lick of paint, some wood (2 layers of MDF), bit of PVA glue, et viola:

All for about 150 and a few afternoons worth of work, took 2 of us, and 2 trolley jacks to lift it into place- also you'll need to make this on a flat floor!

Excellent job. Really great working space you have there.

I'm really pleased with the one I made but I soon realised I needed twice the length! Got another worktop ready to build a second one.

And it's certainly not that tidy anymore...

1" square thin section square tubing works for me. welded. if you are lucky you can recycle some old tables, the kind you would find in a school or office. skip diving.
